New methods for approximating general relativity in numerical simulations of stellar core collapse

We review various approaches to approximating general relativistic effects in hydrodynamic simulations of stellar core collapse and post-bounce evolution. Different formulations of a modified Newtonian gravitational potential are presented. Such an effective relativistic potential can be used in an otherwise standard Newtonian hydrodynamic code. An alternative approximation of general relativity is the assumption of conformal flatness for the three-metric, and its extension by adding second post-Newtonian order terms. Shock capturing methods in 1D numerical relativity

A numerical code is presented which uses modern shock capturing methods to evolve spherically symmetric perfect fluid space-times. Harmonic slicing is used to ensure singularity avoidance, which is crucial in strong field situations. Some tests are presented, including an application to the stellar collapse problem.

Quantum simulation of gauge potentials with cold atoms in optical lattices: a tunable platform for relativistic fermions and axions

We offer here a brief introduction to the idea of quantum simulations with cold atomic gases, with focus on the recent efforts towards artificial gauge potentials and fields. Direct perturbation theory in terms of energy derivatives: Fourth-order relativistic corrections at the Hartree–Fock level

In this work, the quantum-chemical treatment of relativistic effects by means of direct perturbation theory is extended from its lowest order, DPT2, to the next higher order, DPT4. The required theory is given in terms of energy derivatives with the DPT4 energy correction defined as the corresponding second derivative with respect to the relativistic perturbation parameter λ(rel) = c(2) and c as the speed of light. Anomalous dynamics triggered by a non-convex equation of state in relativistic flows

The non-monotonicity of the local speed of sound in dense matter at baryon number densities much higher than the nuclear saturation density ($n_0 \approx 0.16\,$fm$^{-3}$) suggests the possible existence of a non-convex thermodynamics which will lead to a non-convex dynamics. Here, we explore the rich and complex dynamics that an equation of state (EoS) with non-convex regions in the pressure-density plane may develop as a result of genuinely relativistic effects, without a classical counterpart. Radio-optical scrutiny of compact AGN: Correlations between properties of pc-scale jets and optical nuclear emission

We study the correlations between the Very Long Baseline Array radio emission at 15 GHz, extended emission at 151 MHz, and optical nuclear emission at 5100 AA for a complete sample of 135 compact jets. We use the partial Kendall's tau correlation analysis to check the link between radio properties of parsec-scale jets and optical luminosities of host AGN. We find a significant positive correlation for 99 quasars between optical nuclear luminosities and total radio (VLBA) luminosities of unresolved cores at 15 GHz originated at milliarcseconds scales. A ionized reflecting skin above the accretion disk of GX 349+2

The broad emission features in the Fe-Kalpha region of X-ray binary spectra represent an invaluable probe to constrain the geometry and the physics of these systems. Several Low Mass X-ray binary systems (LMXBs) containing a neutron star (NS) show broad emission features between 6 and 7 keV and most of them are nowi nterpreted as reflection features from the inner part of an accretion disk in analogy to those observed in the spectra of X-ray binary systems containing a Black Hole candidate. Alfven QPOs in magnetars in the anelastic approximation

We perform two-dimensional simulations of Alfven oscillations in magnetars, modeled as relativistic stars with a dipolar magnetic field. We use the anelastic approximation to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, which allows for an effective suppression of fluid modes and an accurate description of Alfven waves. In addition, we compute Alfven oscillation frequencies along individual magnetic field lines with a semi-analytic approach, employing a short-wavelength approximation. On Relativistic Disk Spectroscopy in Compact Objects with X-ray CCD Cameras

X-ray charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are the workhorse detectors of modern X-ray astronomy. Typically covering the 0.3-10.0 keV energy range, CCDs are able to detect photoelectric absorption edges and K shell lines from most abundant metals. New CCDs also offer resolutions of 30-50 (E/dE), which is sufficient to detect lines in hot plasmas and to resolve many lines shaped by dynamical processes in accretion flows. The spectral capabilities of X-ray CCDs have been particularly important in detecting relativistic emission lines from the inner disks around accreting neutron stars and black holes. General relativistic neutrino transport using spectral methods

We present a new code, Lorene's Ghost (for Lorene's gravitational handling of spectral transport) developed to treat the problem of neutrino transport in supernovae with the use of spectral methods. First, we derive the expression for the nonrelativistic Liouville operator in doubly spherical coordinates (r, theta, phi, epsilon, Theta, Phi)$, and further its general relativistic counterpart. We use the 3 + 1 formalism with the conformally flat approximation for the spatial metric, to express the Liouville operator in the Eulerian frame.
