Synthesis of enantiopure pyrrolidine-derived peptidomimetics and oligo-beta-peptides via nucleophilic ring-opening of beta-lactams.

The synthesis of the two enantiomers of pyrrolidine-derived spiro beta-lactams by resolution with D- and L-Boc phenylalanine is described. The potential of these optically active spiro beta-lactams on the synthesis of peptidomimetics as analogues of melanostatin is evaluated. Theoretical studies of several models, at the Becke3LYP/6-31+G* level of theory, together with previous experimental evidences from our group, gathered by NMR, allow us to design structures that can efficiently mimic some biologically active peptide-type molecules. Phytochromes are ubiquitous photosensor proteins, which control the growth, reproduction and movement in plants, fungi and bacteria. Phytochromes switch between two photophysical states depending on the light conditions. In analogy to molecular machines, light absorption induces a series of structural changes that are transduced from the bilin chromophore, through the protein, and to the output domains. Delivery modulation in silica mesoporous supports via alkyl chain pore outlet decoration

This article focuses on the study of the release rate in a family of modified silica mesoporous supports. A collection of solids containing ethyl, butyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, octadecyl, docosyl, and triacontyl groups anchored on the pore outlets of mesoporous MCM-41 has been prepared and characterized. Controlled release from pore voids has been studied through the delivery of the dye complex tris(2,2¿-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II). Delivery rates were found to be dependent on the alkyl chain length anchored on the pore outlets of the mesoporous scaffolding. Biogenic iron-silver nanoparticles inhibit bacterial biofilm formation due to Ag+ release as determined by a novel phycoerythrin-based assay

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) can be considered as a cost-effective alternative to antibiotics. In the presence of Fe(III)-citrate and Ag+, Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614 produces biogenic Ag-NPs embedded in its peculiar exopolysaccharide (EPS). K. oxytoca DSM 29614 was cultivated in a defined growth medium–containing citrate (as sole carbon source) and supplemented with Ag+ and either low or high Fe(III) concentration. Single cigar-shaped nanopores functionalized with amphoteric amino acid chains: experimental and theoretical characterization.

We present an experimental and theoretical characterization of single cigar-shaped nanopores with pH-responsive carboxylic acid and lysine chains functionalized on the pore surface.
