The aim of this study was to investigate how at-home cancer patients perceived their life situations during the palliative care phase. The study employed a qualitative exploratory research design involving in-depth personal interviews with six women and two men between the ages of 35 and 63. All the interviewees lived at home, experiencing different life situations and suffering from different types of cancer. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. World Health Organization guidelines for cancer pain: a reappraisal

2005

Pain is a prevalent symptom experienced by at least 30% ofpatients undergoing an oncological treatment for metastaticdisease and by more than 70% of advanced cancer patients[1]. In 1986 the World Health Organization [2] published a setof guidelines for cancer pain management based on the three-step analgesic ladder [2]. The main aim of WHO guidelienswas to legitimize the prescribing of strong opioids, arisingfrom evidence of poor management of cancer pain, due toreluctance of health care professionals, institutions, and gov-ernment to use opioids because of fears of addition, toleranceand illegal abuse. Its application is reported to achieve satisfactory pain reliefin up to 90% of patients w…

Psychological Factors in Childhood Asthma

1994

The influence of the personality of asthmatic children and their mothers on the course of their illness is analysed, taking as a basis a sample of 48 asthmatic children. This is done through the assessment of the role of personality in the change that takes place, after the application of various psychological treatments (relaxation, systematic desensitization and stress inoculation) in three variables: number of days of illness, symptomatic relief drug use and school absences. The results obtained highlight the influence of personality on therapeutic success. Consequently, this study shows the importance of tending to personality traits in order to forecast and improve the effectiveness of…

Medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ): Factors related to recurrence after treatment with surgery and platelet rich plasma (PRP) place…

2020

Background Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a well-known complication associated with antiresorptive and antiangiogenic therapies. The purpose of this study was to analyse if there is any predictive factor of recurrence after local debridement plus platelet rich plasma (PRP) placement in MRONJ patients. Material and Methods Seventy MRONJ patients treated at the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in La Paz Hospital (Madrid, Spain) were included in this retrospective study. All of them were treated surgically by local debridement and PRP placement. The observation period was between January 2012 and January 2019. Information regarding use, type, administration…

Efficacy of Different Medical Therapies for the Treatment of Acute Laryngeal Attacks of Hereditary Angioedema due to C1-esterase Inhibitor Deficiency.

2016

Abstract Background Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease characterized by C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) deficiency, resulting in periodic attacks of acute edema, which can be life-threatening if they occur in the upper airway. No head-to-head comparisons of different treatment options for acute HAE attacks are available. Because immediate symptom relief is critical for potentially life-threatening laryngeal attacks, it is important to determine the treatment option that provides optimal treatment response. Objective Review and compare data from clinical studies that evaluated the efficacy and safety of treatments for laryngeal HAE attacks. Methods We conducted an indirect comparis…

Is arthrocentesis of temporomandibular joint with corticosteroids beneficial? A systematic review

2018

Background Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are musculoskeletal conditions that can inhibit the normal function of temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and affect the patient’s quality of life, negatively. Arthrocentesis (AC) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for treating TMDs. The aim of present paper is to evaluate the advantages of administrating corticosteroid (CS) during AC by reviewing high quality released articles. Material and Methods Searching on Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus databases were performed with focusing on proper key words. Related titles and abstracts, up to December 2017, were screened and selected based on i…

Oral Surgical Management of Bone and Soft Tissues in MRONJ Treatment: A Decisional Tree.

2020

Background: The aim of the present work was to analyze a 10-year retrospective series of surgically treated medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) cases, reporting the clinical outcome and success rate for each adopted procedure in order to draw a treatment algorithm that is able to standardize clinical decision making and maximize the success of oral surgical treatment of MRONJ. Methods: Different surgical approaches were categorized taking into consideration two variables a) hard tissue management (defined as debridement, saucerization or marginal resective surgery of maxillary necrotic bone) and b) soft tissue management (defined as type of flap design and related modality …

Efficacy and tolerability of a plant-based, multi-component cream (Ginetrox®) in vulvovaginal disorders of the genitourinary syndrome during menopaus…

2017

BACKGROUND Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a symptomatic condition including vaginal dryness, irritation, dyspareunia and recurrent urinary tract infections which affects 40-54% of post-menopausal women. Although several estrogen-based therapies are available, it is generally preferable to avoid hormonal therapy, particularly in women with mild symptoms or at risk for estrogen-responsive neoplasia. Therefore, the most common treatment options are over-the-counter vaginal creams for symptomatic relief. METHODS Thirty-three postmenopausal women suffering from GSM were enrolled in this observational study. A multi-component cream (Ginetrox®, Indena, Milan, Italy) was applied on th…
