ABSTRACT: «Sacred Emblematics on Baroque Sepulchres» is a study of urns and reliquaries for Catalan saints. The symbolic language is applied to the funeral container of sacred content, in the specific cases of St. Olegario, St. Armengol, St. Bernard Calbo and St. Mary of Cervello. With them we can refer to three different ways of presenting the sacred iconography in relation to local saints with incorrupt bodies: by means of emblematic literature, hagiography or decorative or heraldic motifs. The essay, starting from a little-known work of art, the reliquary of the skull of the Blessed Gerland kept at the Diocesan Museum of Caltagirone, deepens this figure of thirteenth century knight of the Order of St John who spent part of his life in Caltagirone, Sicily. The Blessed Gerland is one of the most popular early saints and heroes of the Order, who until now has been considered of Nordic origin, in particular Polish or German.

Si esamina la diffusione e la circolazione delle reliquie da Roma alla Sicilia e la conseguente proliferazione, a seguito dei dettami del Concilio di Trento recepiti dai vari Sinodi diocesani, di sacre custodie in metallo prezioso o in legno. Vengono, infatti, indagati alcuni reliquiari d’argento che, custoditi nei Tesori siciliani, sono contestualizzati nella pertinente temperie storico-culturale. Restoration of a XVII Century’s predella reliquary: From Physico-Chemical Characterization to the Conservation Process

We report on the restoration of a XVII century’s predella reliquary, which is a part of a larger setup that includes a wall reliquary and a wooden crucified Christ, both belonging to the church of “Madre Maria SS. Assunta”, in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, Italy. The historical/artistic and paleographic research was flanked successfully by the scientific objective characterization of the materials. The scientific approach was relevant in the definition of the steps for the restoration of the artefact. The optical microscopy was used for the identification of the wood species.
