H-ficolin (ficolin-3) concentrations and FCN3 gene polymorphism in neonates

2011

Serum H-ficolin (ficolin-3) concentrations (n=613) and FCN3 genotypes (n=529) from a large group of neonates are presented. Both pre-term deliveries and low birthweight (independently of gestational age) were significantly associated with low H-ficolin concentrations but not with heterozygosity for the FCN3 1637delC frameshift mutation. The presence of the variant allele, however, apparently influenced the protein level. No association of FCN3 gene heterozygosity or relative functional H-ficolin insufficiency (determined as serum level ≤8.6 μg/ml) with perinatal infections was found. One premature newborn, with confirmed infection caused by Streptococcus agalactiae, was H-ficolin-deficient …

Novel LRPPRC compound heterozygous mutation in a child with early-onset Leigh syndrome French-Canadian type: Case report of an Italian patient

2020

Abstract Background Mitochondrial diseases, also known as oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) disorders, with a prevalence rate of 1:5000, are the most frequent inherited metabolic diseases. Leigh Syndrome French Canadian type (LSFC), is caused by mutations in the nuclear gene (2p16) leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat-containing (LRPPRC). It is an autosomal recessive neurogenetic OXPHOS disorder, phenotypically distinct from other types of Leigh syndrome, with a carrier frequency up to 1:23 and an incidence of 1:2063 in the Saguenay-Lac-St Jean region of Quebec. Recently, LSFC has also been reported outside the French-Canadian population. Patient presentation We report a male Italian (Sic…

Th17 responses in Echinostoma caproni infections in hosts of high and low compatibility.

2011

In order to investigate the factors determining the expulsion of intestinal helminths, we have analyzed the in vivo expression of IL-17, TGF-β and IL-23 in several tissues of two host species displaying different compatibility with Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda). We did not observe upregulation of these cytokines in any of the tissues of the high compatible host (mice). In contrast, the responses in the host of low compatibility (rats) with the parasite were markedly different. Significant increases in the expression of IL-17 and TGF-β were observed in the Peyer's patches and the intestine from the 2 to 8 weeks post-infection. The expression of IL-23 was upregulated from 2 to 4 weeks post-…

In vitro embryo survival and early viability of larvae in relation to male sexual ornaments and parasite resistance in roach, Rutilus rutilus L.

2004

According to the ‘good genes’ hypothesis, sexual ornaments provide an indication of the ‘quality’ of the bearer. In roach, Rutilus rutilus, breeding tubercles (BTs) may signal resistance against the digenean parasite, Rhipidocotyle campanula. Life history theory predicts that there should be a trade-off between parasite resistance and other life history traits. In roach, this could imply a trade-off between parasite resistance in mature fish and some larval feature. We studied embryo survival and the early viability of larvae of male roach in relation to expression of BTs and parasite resistance in maternal half-sibling families. Highly ornamented males had higher resistance against R. camp…

Pulchrosomapulchrosoma(Trematoda: Cathaemasiidae) in Ringed kingfishers (Megaceryletorquatatorquata) from Iquitos, Peru: with inferences on life-cycl…

2007

In the winter of 2001, four Ringed kingfishers (Megaceryle torquata torquata) were imported from Iquitos, Peru for the zoological garden Faunia in Madrid. Two individuals were necropsied, and infections by the digenean trematode Pulchrosoma pulchrosoma were discovered inside granulomas located in the lung, trachea and coelomic cavity. The life cycle of this trematode species is unknown. In one case the host maintained the parasite infection for at least 5 months, which represents a relatively long prepatency period. Moreover, the body locations in the hosts may suggest that the parasite is able to actively cross the lungs from the coelomic cavity to propagate.

Analysis of the tegument of Zygocotyle lunata (Trematoda: Paramphistomidae) adults by scanning electron microscopy.

2012

Paramphistomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by various species of the Paramphistomidae. These species mainly affect domestic and wild ruminants; the economic impact of these diseases is often underestimated. Traditionally, the identification of paramphistomes has been difficult and has been based on morphological aspects such as the body shape, the position of the esophagus and cecae, or the tegumental papillae. Despite the many investigations regarding the tegumental papillae for other paramphistomes, very few efforts have been made using Zygocotyle lunata, partly because many authors differ with respect to the importance of papillae in the classification of paramphistomids. Herein, we…

First spermatological data on the digenean genus Ityogonimus derived from the description of sperm characters of Ityogonimus ocreatus (Brachylaimidae…

2021

Abstract The present study describes the ultrastructural organization of the spermatozoa of the brachylaimid digenean Ityogonimus ocreatus (Ityogoniminae) by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Live digeneans were collected from the digestive tract of an Iberian mole Talpa occidentalis (Eulipotyphla, Talpidae) captured accidentally during a vole pest control campaign in Priesca (Asturias, Spain). The TEM study reveals that the I. ocreatus sperm are filiform, tapered at both extremities, and have two 9+'1' trepaxonematan axonemes, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane associated with cortical microtubules, spine-like bodies, two bundles of parallel cortical microtubules …

Paternal symptoms of anxiety and depression in the first month after childbirth: A comparison between fathers of full term and preterm infants

2020

Abstract Background Although men have a higher risk of developing a mental disorder during the perinatal period, few studies have focused on new fathers’ mental health screening. This study compares anxiety and depression symptoms between fathers with newborn infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and fathers of healthy full-term infants, assessing the impact of stress caused by the NICU.. Methods A longitudinal and prospective study with control (n= 33) and study groups (n=51) was designed. The dependent variables assessed were post-natal depression and anxiety-state while the social and demographic information, health background and the parental stress in the neonatal unit wer…

Development and pathology of echinostoma caproni in experimentally infected mice

2007

In the present article, several parasitological features of mice, each experimentally infected with 75 metacercariae of Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae), were studied during the first 12 wk postinfection. Moreover, the early pathological responses also were analyzed and compared with data previously published on other host species of E. caproni to gain further insight into the factors determining worm rejection or establishment of chronic infections. The results obtained show that the pattern of E. caproni infection in mice is consistent with a highly compatible host–parasite system. This combination is characterized by a high worm establishment, high egg output, and long s…
