Statin-induced autoimmune myositis: a proposal of an “experience-based” diagnostic algorithm from the analysis of 69 patients

2023

AbstractStatin-induced autoimmune myositis (SIAM) represents a rare clinical entity that can be triggered by prolonged statin treatment. Its pathogenetic substrate consists of an autoimmune-mediated mechanism, evidenced by the detection of antibodies directed against the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (anti-HMGCR Ab), the target enzyme of statin therapies. To facilitate the diagnosis of nuanced SIAM clinical cases, the present study proposes an “experience-based” diagnostic algorithm for SIAM. We have analyzed the clinical data of 69 patients diagnosed with SIAM. Sixty-seven patients have been collected from the 55 available and complete case records regarding SIAM in the l…

Transcervical approach for carotid artery stenting with transitory reversal flow: Case report

2021

Introduction Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has been indicated as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy in high risk patients. Sometimes, an aortic arch can be anatomically unfavourable for CAS. Herein we report our experience in a case of CAS with transcervical approach. Presentation of case A 77-year-old male was referred to our hospital for severe subtotal occlusion of the left internal carotid artery. He had a past medical history of radiation to the head and neck for laryngeal cancer. Previous CT-angiography had shown a type III aortic with bovine arch. CAS via transcervical approach was performed with transitory reversal flow during the placement of RX Spider Filter 6 Fr (Medtronic,…

Early structural degeneration of Mitroflow aortic valve: Another issue in addition to the mismatch?

2018

We reported two cases of early structural valve degeneration (SVD) with Mitroflow prosthesis in aortic position in patients above the age of 65 years. Microscopic aspects have been analysed to investigate the intrinsic mechanism of SVD. New techniques to improve the structure and the preservation of this prosthesis are needed in order to reduce potential dangerous early complications.

Real-life assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis patients using mobile technology: the mySinusitisCoach project by EUFOREA

2020

Abstract Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with a substantial personal and socioeconomic burden. Monitoring of patient‐reported outcomes by mobile technology offers the possibility to better understand real‐life burden of CRS. Methods This study reports on the cross‐sectional evaluation of data of 626 users of mySinusitisCoach (mSC), a mobile application for CRS patients. Patient characteristics of mSC users were analysed as well as the level of disease control based on VAS global rhinosinusitis symptom score and adapted EPOS criteria. Results The mSC cohort represents a heterogeneous group of CRS patients with a diverse pattern of major sy…

Distal Arthrogryposis type 5 in an Italian family due to an autosomal dominant gain-of-function mutation of the PIEZO2 gene

2022

Abstract Background Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a group of clinically and etiologically heterogeneous conditions, characterized by prenatal onset contractures affecting two or more joints. Its incidence is about 1 in 3000 live births. AMC may be distinguished into amyoplasia, distal and syndromic arthrogryposis. Distal arthrogryposis (DA) predominantly affects hands and feet. It is currently divided into more than ten subtypes (DA1, DA2A/B, DA3–10), based on clinical manifestations, gene mutations and inheritance pattern. Among them, only a few patients with DA5 have been reported. It is associated to a gain-of-function pathogenic variant of the PIEZO2 gene, encoding for an …

Enhancer trap infidelity in Drosophila optomotor-blind

2013

Reporter gene activity in enhancer trap lines is often implicitly assumed to mirror quite faithfully the endogenous expression of the "trapped" gene, even though there are numerous examples of enhancer trap infidelity. optomotor-blind (omb) is a 160 kb gene in which 16 independent P-element enhancer trap insertions of three different types have been mapped in a range of more than 60 kb. We have determined the expression pattern of these elements in wing, eye-antennal and leg imaginal discs as well as in the pupal tergites. We noted that one pGawB insertion (omb (P4) ) selectively failed to report parts of the omb pattern even though the missing pattern elements were apparent in all other 15…

The Role of Recent Admixture in Forming the Contemporary West Eurasian Genomic Landscape

2015

Summary Over the past few years, studies of DNA isolated from human fossils and archaeological remains have generated considerable novel insight into the history of our species. Several landmark papers have described the genomes of ancient humans across West Eurasia, demonstrating the presence of large-scale, dynamic population movements over the last 10,000 years, such that ancestry across present-day populations is likely to be a mixture of several ancient groups [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. While these efforts are bringing the details of West Eurasian prehistory into increasing focus, studies aimed at understanding the processes behind the generation of the current West Eurasian genetic landsc…

High magnetic fields for fundamental physics

2018

Various fundamental-physics experiments such as measurement of the birefringence of the vacuum, searches for ultralight dark matter (e.g., axions), and precision spectroscopy of complex systems (including exotic atoms containing antimatter constituents) are enabled by high-field magnets. We give an overview of current and future experiments and discuss the state-of-the-art DC- and pulsed-magnet technologies and prospects for future developments.

Salivary gland choristoma in the buccinator muscle: A case report and literature review

2015

Salivary gland choristoma (SGCh) is defined as the presence of normal salivary tissue in an abnormal location. It is a rare entity in oral and maxillofacial region and its ethiology is unknown. The typical presentation of salivary gland heterotopia is an asymptomatic mass that may or may not produce saliva. Some examples of ectopic salivary tissue in the pituitary gland, in the lymph nodes, in the middle ear, in the neck, in the jaw, in the thyroid gland, in the mediastinum and in the rectum have been documented in literature. We report the case of a 61-year-old male presented with a bilateral tumorlike mass in the cheek. The mass was painless, of fibrous consistency and had size change wit…

Disclosing Conflict of Interest - Do Experience and Reputation Matter?

2009

In a controlled laboratory experiment, we investigate the effects of disclosing conflicts of interest on the reporting of information providers. First, we replicate the findings of Cain, Loewenstein, and Moore (2005) that such disclosure makes misreporting more likely as it removes moral concerns. Second, we observe that these effects diminish given experience and find, to the opposite, that disclosure reduces bias in auditors' reporting as predicted by economic theory. Third, we identify disclosure of conflicts of interest as a potential impediment to reputation formation.
