Moral Attitudes Toward Pharmacological Cognitive Enhancement (PCE): Differences and Similarities Among Germans With and Without PCE Experience

2018

Pharmacological cognitive enhancement (PCE), the use of illicit and/or prescription drugs to increase cognitive performance, has spurred controversial discussion in bioethics. In a semi-structured interview study with 60 German university students and employees, differences and similarities in moral attitudes toward PCE among 30 experienced participants (EPs) vs. 30 inexperienced participants (IPs) were investigated. Substances EPs used most often are methylphenidate, amphetamines, tetrahydrocannabinol and modafinil. Both EPs and IPs addressed topics such as autonomous decision making or issues related to fairness such as equality in test evaluation and distortion of competition. While most…

A Rare Case of Water Intoxication in Unusual Chiropratic Prescription: A Medico-Legal Analysis Due to Alleged Malpractice.

Water intoxication is a well-recognized cause of symptomatic hyponatremia, whose often fatal consequences are described in a wide variety of conditions such as psychiatric disorders, metabolic dysfunctions, child abuse, drug abuse and several medical procedures. The case. We here report a rare case of a 67-year-old woman with severe acute hyponatremia due to an excessive voluntary water intake – 14 litres in two days – following a chiropractic prescription. The patient developed sudden severe symptoms, including water retention, sensory alteration, altered mental status and tonic-clonic seizures. She was thus admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with a diagnosis of coma due to …

Fides integra, sana, non vaccilans: Mancio de corpus christi († 1576) on the (in)compatibility of doubt and good faith

2018

In his lecture notes, the Salamanca scholar Mancio de Corpus Christi († 1576) dealt extensively with the moral-theological question of whether a possessor in doubt as to his entitlement of a possession, lacks the necessary good faith for acquisitive prescription. Mancio discusses, evaluates and compares existing opinions of moral theologians of his time on the matter and expounds on his own teaching. The dialectical discourse reveals that opting for a more or less minimalistic concept of morality is one of the decisive factors.

Information Infrastructures for eHealth

2017

This chapter provides an introductory overview of healthcare information systems, followed by a more detailed discussion on two types of core components in a public eHealth infrastructure: e-prescription solutions and governmental patient-oriented platforms. E-prescription solutions support the electronic flow of information for prescribed medications between prescribers, pharmacies and insurers that handle related payments. E-prescription solutions aim for cost containment, enhancement of patient safety, control over doctors’ prescription patterns and process quality assurance. Governmental platforms for patient- or citizen-oriented eHealth services typically offer patients access to gener…

À partir d'enquêtes récentes, des sociologues expliquent ce que sont et font les généralistes dans leur cabinet, ils analysent les "flous du métier"…

Psychotropic drugs and driving: prevalence and types

2013

Background Some psychotropic medications (e.g., benzodiazepines, sedative antidepressants, etc.) may impair cognitive and psychomotor functions and, therefore, endanger traffic safety (Ravera, Br J Clin Pharmacol, 72(3):505–513, 2011). They affect detection, registration, and information processing, problem solving, and decision-making processes, and they also affect emotional and social aspects. The objective of this research was to clarify three closely related issues that are significant for traffic safety: the prevalence of psychotropic drugs on driving, the most frequently used psychotropic drugs to treat depression, anxiety, insomnia, or any tranquilizers (whether it is a medical pres…
