The Contribution of Electrical Resistivity Measurements to the Analysis of Landslide Events

2005

In order to gain insight into the study of natural avalanches dynamics, we illustrate a statistical model based on a dissipative dynamical variable associated to a position dependent factor of safety field. This model, as experimentally demonstrated, is able to reproduce the complex structure of landslide events, such as power-law distributions. In this paper, we introduce an explicit dependence of the safety factor on the electrical resistivity to simulate landslide events in pyroclastic soils. An application of the model to data acquired in a test area characterized by flowslide events (Monte Albino, Campania Region - South Italy) bear witness the relevant role played by the resistivity m…

Protection of Trees against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life

2021

Lighting strikes have been the catalyst of massive uncontrolled fires in areas of combustible vegetation. In some regions, lightning strikes may be a relatively unusual occurrence (e.g., California), but instead they seem to have become a major contributor to the propagation of wildfires, as a byproduct of climate change. Given such unusual weather, wildfires originating from lightning are an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce a proactive approach to prevent wildfires by the deployment of tree lighting protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment.

PENENTUAN KEDALAMAN SUMUR BOR BERDASARKAN DATA GEOLISTRIK RESISTIVITAS DI BEBERAPA KAMPUNG DI KABUPATEN FAK-FAK

2018

Geoelectrical R esistivity method is a geophysical method that can be used to determine subsurface geology based on rock resistivity image. Resistivity survey has been done in some villages, in Fak Fak Regency, West Papua Province. The measurement method that used is sounding, whereas electrode configuration used is Dipole-dipole configuration with a stretch of 100 -150 m. The data obtained are then processed by Progress Res2Dinv. The results of this survey obtained show that in the resistivity sounding measurement point found any good groundwater aquifers, a s the water source of drilled well . Water layer with the thickness between 1-3 m at the surface (alluvial) is a rain water infiltrat…

Integrated geophysical survey for 3D modelling of a coastal aquifer polluted by seawater

2013

Geophysical surveys are carried out in the coastal area of Petrosino (south-western Sicily) to study the time evolution of seawater contamination of the coastal aquifer, probably increased due to human impact. The overexploitation of the aquifer, due to an intensive agricultural use has affected significantly the natural hydro-geochemical state of the basin. The study is based on a processing and integrated analysis of hydrogeological, geochemical and geophysical data. In particular in the last two years seasonal time-lapse electrical resistivity tomographies (ERT), new TDEM soundings and Multi-Analysis Surface Wave soundings (MASW) have been carried out. The interpretation of the total set…

Comparative tests on different multi-electrode arrays using models in near-surface geophysics

2008

In this paper, the response of different synthetic models to geoelectrical multi-electrode surveys is studied. The models considered are related to two main problems, which are very common in geophysical research regarding hydrogeology and engineering. The first class of models represents buried walls, similar archaeological remains or remains of buried foundations; the other class corresponds to a sea-water intrusion of a fresh water aquifer, which is generally studied in hydrogeophysics. A set of 2D simulations, starting from the synthetic models, was carried out to compare the behaviour of the different arrays when acquiring measurements of electrical resistivity tomography. For each mod…

Synthesis, characterization and conformational analysis of chloro-bis(glycylglycinate)germanium(IV) chloride

2011

Chloro-bis(glycylglycinate)germanium(IV) chloride, [Cl(glygly)2Ge]Cl, was synthesized and characterized in the solid state by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry and infrared spectroscopy. Solution studies were also performed by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO-d6) and by electric conductivity. The structural determination of the complex and the interpretation of the spectroscopic results were performed by employing an integrated computational approach, based on a systematic conformational search analysis on the [Cl(glygly)2Ge]+ ion performed by the Systematic Conformational Search Algorithm (SCSA) code, working at the hybrid B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. The combination of experime…

Recognition of earthquake-induced damage in the Abakainon necropolis (NE Sicily): results from geo-morphological, geophysical and numerical analyses

2017

Seismotectonic activity and slope instability are a permanent threat in the archaeological site of Abakainon and in the nearby village of Tripi in NE Sicily. In recent times, signs of an ancient earthquake have been identified in the necropolis of Abakainon which dating was ascertained to the first century AD earthquake. The site is located on a slope of Peloritani Mts. along the Tindari Fault Line and contains evidence for earthquake-induced landslide, including fallen columns and blocks, horizontal shift and counter slope tilting of the tomb basements. In this paper, we used an integrated geomorphological and geophysical analysis to constrain the landslide. The research was directed to th…

Integration of constrained electrical and seismic tomographies to study the landslide affecting the cathedral of Agrigento

2014

The Cathedral of Saint Gerland, located on the top of the hill of Agrigento, is an important historical church, which dates back to the Arab–Norman period (XI century). Unfortunately throughout its history the Cathedral and the adjacent famous Archaeological Park of the 'Valley of the Temples' have been affected by landslides. In this area the interleaving of calcarenites, silt, sand and clay is complicated by the presence of dislocated rock blocks and cavities and by a system of fractures partly filled with clay or water. Integrated geophysical surveys were carried out on the north side of the hill, on which the Cathedral of Agrigento is founded, to define lithological structures involved …

Geomorphological and geophysical investigations to study the landslide affecting the archaeological site of abakainon

2016

In recent years, a detailed archeoseismological investigation has been carried out in the necropolis of Abakainon in order to identify traces of an ancient earthquake. Although the identification of seismic damage was undoubtedly attributed to the 1st century AD earthquake, it was hypothesised that the level of damaging observed in the necropolis, as well as the counter slope tilting of the tomb basements may have also caused by a seismo-induced landslide, which produced locally an amplification of the seismic shaking. In order to identify the landslide, on which the Greek site lies, detailed geomorphological and geophysical surveys have been carried out. The research was directed to the ac…
