The effect of perspective taking on the mediation process

2018

Stefano Boca, Maria Garro, Isabella Giammusso, Costanza Scaffidi Abbate Department of Psychology, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: Previous research demonstrated several benefits of strategic perspective taking in the field of intergroup relations and, more specifically, in the negotiation processes aimed at conflict resolution. The present study, which analyzes the effect of perspective taking and mediation in a conflict setting, corroborates the psychological models that hypothesize the positive effects of the assumption of the competitor’s perspective on having intergroup conflict and lessening of negative consequences. Materials and methods: After being involv…

Towards the determination of isoprene in human breath using substrate-integrated hollow waveguide mid-infrared sensors

2014

Selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath may be considered biomarkers if they are indicative of distinct diseases or disease states. Given the inherent molecular selectivity of vibrational spectroscopy, infrared sensing technologies appear ideally suitable for the determination of endogenous VOCs in breath. The aim of this study was to determine that mid-infrared (MIR; 3-20 µm) gas phase sensing is capable of determining isoprene in exhaled breath as an exemplary medically relevant VOC by hyphenating novel substrate-integrated hollow waveguides (iHWG) with a likewise miniaturized preconcentration system. A compact preconcentrator column for sampling isoprene from exhaled breath …

Persistent tachypnea of infancy: Follow up at school age

2020

Background Persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI) is a rare pediatric lung disease of unknown origin. The diagnosis can be made by clinical presentation and chest high resolution computed tomography after exclusion of other causes. Clinical courses beyond infancy have rarely been assessed. Methods Patients included in the Kids Lung Register diagnosed with PTI as infants and now older than 5 years were identified. Initial presentation, extrapulmonary comorbidities, spirometry and clinical outcome were analyzed. Results Thirty-five children older than 5 years with PTI diagnosed as infants were analyzed. At the age of 5 years, 74% of the patients were reported as asymptomatic and did not develo…

The impact of SARS-COV2 pandemic on the management oF IPF patients: Our narrative experience

2021

Abstract Background The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has changed the health-care systems around the world in a remarkable way. We describe the strategies adopted to cope with the limitations imposed by the pandemic to the access to health care by patients diagnosed with idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Material and methods We conducted a retrospective observational analysis including IPF patients under antifibrotic drugs (nintedanib and pirfenidone) that accessed to the Outpatient clinic of the University of Palermo, Italy. Patients received a phone number and an email address in case of any urgency and a virtual meeting was settled up monthly. Results 40 patients (M/F: 30/10) were followed up, …

A closer look at mirrors and quotients of Calabi-Yau threefolds

2016

Let X be the toric variety (P1)4 associated with its four-dimensional polytope 1. Denote by X˜ the resolution of the singular Fano variety Xo associated with the dual polytope 1o. Generically, anticanonical sections Y of X and anticanonical sections Y˜ of X˜ are mirror partners in the sense of Batyrev. Our main result is the following: the Hodge-theoretic mirror of the quotient Z associated to a maximal admissible pair (Y, G) in X is not a quotient Z˜ associated to an admissible pair in X˜ . Nevertheless, it is possible to construct a mirror orbifold for Z by means of a quotient of a suitable Y˜. Its crepant resolution is a Calabi-Yau threefold with Hodge numbers (8, 4). Instead, if we star…

La singularité de O’Grady

2006

Let M 2 v M_{2v} be the moduli space of semistable sheaves with Mukai vector 2 v 2v on an abelian or K 3 K3 surface where v v is primitive such that ⟨ v , v ⟩ = 2 \langle v,v \rangle =2 . We show that the blow-up of the reduced singular locus of M 2 v M_{2v} provides a symplectic resolution of singularities. This provides a direct description of O’Grady’s resolutions of M K 3 ( 2 , 0 , 4 ) M_{K3}(2,0,4) and M A b ( 2 , 0 , 2 ) M_{Ab}(2,0,2) .

Extended pseudo-fermions from non commutative bosons

2013

We consider some modifications of the two dimensional canonical commutation relations, leading to {\em non commutative bosons} and we show how biorthogonal bases of the Hilbert space of the system can be obtained out of them. Our construction extends those recently introduced by one of us (FB), modifying the canonical anticommutation relations. We also briefly discuss how bicoherent states, producing a resolution of the identity, can be defined.

Projective resolutions associated to projections

2000

In this paper we will describe projective resolutions of d dimensional Cohen–Macaulay spaces X by means of a projection of X to a hypersurface in d+1-dimensional space. We will show that for a certain class of projections, the resulting resolution is minimal.

A construction of equivariant bundles on the space of symmetric forms

2021

We construct stable vector bundles on the space of symmetric forms of degree d in n+1 variables which are equivariant for the action of SL_{n+1}(C), and admit an equivariant free resolution of length 2. For n=1, we obtain new examples of stable vector bundles of rank d-1 on P^d, which are moreover equivariant for SL_2(C). The presentation matrix of these bundles attains Westwick's upper bound for the dimension of vector spaces of matrices of constant rank and fixed size.

Complementary mobile-phase optimisation for resolution enhancement in high-performance liquid chromatography.

2000

An optimisation methodology in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is presented for the selection of two or more mobile phases having an optimal complementary resolution. The complementary mobile phases (CMPs) are selected in such a way that each one resolves optimally only some compounds in the mixture, while the remainder, resolved by the other mobile phase(s), can overlap among them. The methodology is based on the computation of a peak purity measurement for each solute, using an asymmetrical peak model for peak simulation. Two global resolution criteria (product of elementary resolutions and worst elementary resolution) and two methods for solving the problem (a systematic ex…
