Predicting accelerometer-based physical activity in physical education and total physical activity: The Self-determination Theory approach

2019

The present study tested the motivational model of physical education (PE) including needs for competence, autonomy, social relatedness, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, in-class moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and total MVPA. Participants were 490 (264 girls, 226 boys) Finnish elementary school students. The data were collected using accelerometers and questionnaires for a seven-day period during the fall semester 2017. The key findings were that 1) social relatedness associated with total MVPA via in-class MVPA in girls, whereas competence was linked to in-class MVPA through extrinsic motivation in boys, 2) competence was positively linked to extrinsic motivation in a si…

A one-year follow-up of basic psychological need satisfactions in physical education and associated in-class and total physical activity

2020

This study examined basic psychological need satisfactions for competence, autonomy, and social relatedness in physical education (PE) and their contributions to accelerometer-based in-class and total moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) across a one-year follow-up (T1). Participants were 523 students (girls 280, boys 243; mean age = 11.26 ± 0.31) and the data were collected using self-reports and waist-worn accelerometers. The key findings were: (a) competence and social relatedness need satisfaction at baseline (T0) predicted total MVPA at T1 via total MVPA at T0; (b) in-class MVPA at T0 predicted total MVPA at T1 via total MVPA at T0; (c) in-class MVPA was directly associated w…

Sustainable Manufacturing as Mutual Competence Building

2015

In this chapter, Sustainable Manufacturing as MCB, Halvor Holtskog, Richard Ennals, and Hans Chr Garmann Johnsen argue how sustainable manufacturing can be seen as combining the traditional manufacturing management perspective with organisational development and participatory perspectives. The definition of Sustainable Business Systems is different from other uses of sustainability. The chapter tries to link arguments for business and for education. Arguably Working Life Research has an integrative role. One might ask: how can universities be seen as sustainable work systems, and how can they develop an account of empowerment?

Towards Performance, Quality and Environmental Management in Local Government: the Case of Spain

2009

Abstract The search for improvements in the management and quality of public services seems to be a constant in all public administrations, and there is an ever-increasing use of management techniques and models from the business sector. The aim of this paper is to show which management systems are being used by Spanish local governments to improve their management in terms of economy, quality and the environment. Our analysis is based on a questionnaire sent to Spanish local governments about the tools they use and the factors that influence their implementation. The results show that more efforts are necessary to implement performance measurement and total quality management, but they als…

Total Quality Management

1999

Eight hotel managers in Valencia, Spain, identified what criteria they considered important for a hotel's TQM program. Those findings were then compared to the results of standard EFQM studies (European Foundation for Quality Management), and the differences noted and analyzed. Given the categories of leadership, policy and strategy, personnel management, resources, and processes, hoteliers rated "resources" as far and away the most important factor relative to the others, and, surprisingly, rated "personnel management" and "leadership" as relatively unimportant. By comparison, EFQM studies ranked those same factors in this order, from most to least important: processes, leadership, policy…

The Importance of Internal Resources and Capabilities and Destination Resources to Explain Firm Competitive Position in the Spanish Tourism Industry

2015

This study draws on the Resource-Based View to analyze the effects of distinctive competences in tourism firms and location in a tourism district on competitive position, and explores the moderating effects of the tourism destination. Multiple linear regression was used to test the research hypotheses on a sample of 1019 Spanish tourism firms. Results reveal that financial resources and dynamic and production capabilities favor a better competitive position for tourism firms in general; however, coordination and marketing capabilities are key factors for firms embedded in a tourism district, while dynamic capabilities have a negative effect in this case. Is tourism firm competitiveness driven by different internal or external specific factors?: New empirical evidence from Spain

2015

Abstract The quest to understand the multilevel antecedents of competitiveness has led to a separation of approaches. On one side of the question are the environment theories that analyze the structural characteristics of the general and competitive environment. On the other side are the Resource Based View and its extensions that highlight firm-specific resources and capabilities as the main basis of firms' competitiveness. However, in recent years the nature of competition and shifting economic conditions have given rise to new theoretical approaches that complement the assumptions underlying both environmental and firm theories. Specifically, this study contributes by examining the regio…

The Uncertainty of Oil

2017

This paper argues that uncertainty is intricately entwined with temporalities and aff ects. Taking the uncertain future of oil in Gabon as my ethnographic example, I trace fi ve versions with which people contemplate depletion: a scenario, a vision / plan, a calculation, a dream, and a desire. I show how these versions not only diff er in their prognosis, but also conjure up diverse histories, temporalities and aff ects that, ultimately, entail fairly distinct forms of uncertainty.

French firms’ strategies for protecting their intellectual property

2012

In attempting to protect their innovations, firms can choose from a range of mechanisms, which may be either non-statutory (trade secrets, design complexity, and lead-time advantage over competitors) or statutory (patent, design registration, trademark, copyright). Yet, little is known about how firms do actually make their choices from among these different appropriability mechanisms. The aim of this paper is to determine how French firms’ use of intellectual property protection mechanisms relates to the type of innovation, the characteristics of the market sector in which they operate, the firms’ characteristics, and their human resources strategies. Our empirical model draws on four Fren…
