Personal goal orientations and subjective well-being of adolescents
2012
The present study examines the types of orientation that can be identified according to the personal goals of adolescents, and how these orientations differ in their subjective well-being. In the context of the person-oriented approach, 1144 17-year-olds (565 girls, 579 boys) filled in the revised Little's personal project analysis, school burnout, depression, life satisfaction, and self-esteem inventories. Four goal orientations emerged from this data with cluster analysis: (1) property (40%), (2) vocation (24%), (3) social relationships and future education (23%), and (4) self-focused (13%) orientations. Boys were the majority in the property and the vocation orientations, whereas girls d…
Predicting accelerometer-based physical activity in physical education and total physical activity: The Self-determination Theory approach
2019
The present study tested the motivational model of physical education (PE) including needs for competence, autonomy, social relatedness, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, in-class moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and total MVPA. Participants were 490 (264 girls, 226 boys) Finnish elementary school students. The data were collected using accelerometers and questionnaires for a seven-day period during the fall semester 2017. The key findings were that 1) social relatedness associated with total MVPA via in-class MVPA in girls, whereas competence was linked to in-class MVPA through extrinsic motivation in boys, 2) competence was positively linked to extrinsic motivation in a si…
A one-year follow-up of basic psychological need satisfactions in physical education and associated in-class and total physical activity
2020
This study examined basic psychological need satisfactions for competence, autonomy, and social relatedness in physical education (PE) and their contributions to accelerometer-based in-class and total moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) across a one-year follow-up (T1). Participants were 523 students (girls 280, boys 243; mean age = 11.26 ± 0.31) and the data were collected using self-reports and waist-worn accelerometers. The key findings were: (a) competence and social relatedness need satisfaction at baseline (T0) predicted total MVPA at T1 via total MVPA at T0; (b) in-class MVPA at T0 predicted total MVPA at T1 via total MVPA at T0; (c) in-class MVPA was directly associated w…
Sustainable Manufacturing as Mutual Competence Building
2015
In this chapter, Sustainable Manufacturing as MCB, Halvor Holtskog, Richard Ennals, and Hans Chr Garmann Johnsen argue how sustainable manufacturing can be seen as combining the traditional manufacturing management perspective with organisational development and participatory perspectives. The definition of Sustainable Business Systems is different from other uses of sustainability. The chapter tries to link arguments for business and for education. Arguably Working Life Research has an integrative role. One might ask: how can universities be seen as sustainable work systems, and how can they develop an account of empowerment?
French firms’ strategies for protecting their intellectual property
2012
In attempting to protect their innovations, firms can choose from a range of mechanisms, which may be either non-statutory (trade secrets, design complexity, and lead-time advantage over competitors) or statutory (patent, design registration, trademark, copyright). Yet, little is known about how firms do actually make their choices from among these different appropriability mechanisms. The aim of this paper is to determine how French firms’ use of intellectual property protection mechanisms relates to the type of innovation, the characteristics of the market sector in which they operate, the firms’ characteristics, and their human resources strategies. Our empirical model draws on four Fren…
Trandix: Herramienta Proactiva para la Búsqueda Terminológica del Traductor y su Evaluación
2014
This article is the English version of “Trandix: herramienta proactiva para la búsqueda terminológica del traductor y su evaluación” by Isabel Durán Muñoz & Alejandro Fernández Sola. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. This paper analyses current trends in the terminological field and translators’ needs regarding terminological resources. In this context, it presents the Trandix tool, a novel software application that intends to enhance efficiency in terminological searches conducted by translators. In addition to its main features, this …
Trandix: herramienta proactiva para la búsqueda terminológica del traductor y su evaluación
2014
This paper analyses current trends in the terminography field and translators’ needs regarding terminology resources. In this context, the Trandix tool is presented as a novel software application that pursues efficiency in terminological searches conducted by translators. This tool is based on Tarp’s Function Theory of Lexicography (2008a) and Spohr’s proposal concerning electronic multifunctional dictionaries (2009). A further goal of this paper is to serve as an example for future research in terminological resources aiming to meet translators’ requirements and expectations when carrying out terminology searches
A transaction cost analysis of staffing decisions in international operations
2005
Abstract This paper analyzes staffing decisions in foreign subsidiaries from the perspective of transaction cost theory. We focus on the ex post transaction costs of the employment relation. Specifically, we look at the monitoring, bonding, maladaptation, and bargaining costs of conducting activities in specific subsidiaries in a foreign country. We hypothesize that the transaction costs of using expatriates are lower than those generated by local employees, especially in the higher managerial echelons of foreign subsidiaries, but also that costs can be reduced as individuals become more experienced. We also conjecture that ex post transaction costs are influenced by cultural differences be…
Effect of Wheat Straw as a Cover Crop on the Chlorophyll, Seed, and Oilseed Yield of
2019
The effects of water stress on fenugreek crops are well documented. However, little is known about how these plants respond to water deficits under a soil-mulching system when the surface is protected. Therefore, the current research aims to demonstrate the possibility of reducing the impact of water stress and weed competition on the fenugreek crop through the use of wheat residues as a cover crop on the soil surface. A field experiment was carried out during the winter season (2016–2017) using a split-plot design arrangement with three replicates. The experiments included four levels of water deficit, which consisted of a 40% depletion treatment as a control plot, and 50%, 60%, and 70% de…
