The image of the smoking and non-smoking young person

MORE than 1,600 Finnish secondary school pupils between the ages of 12 and 16 completed a question naire about their image of the smoking and non- smoking adolescent. A smoker was described as nervous, unfriendly, untidy, stupid and a low achiever in sport and academic work, but despite this, was seen as a leader. Non-smokers were seen as calm, strong, fairly modest, friendly, tidy and smart, but not as leaders. Older pupils saw the smoker in a more positive light. Those who smoked saw the non- smoker image as positive, and rated the smoking image more highly than did non smokers.

The resulting typical potential risks may be (among others) both hypoxaemia and hypercapnia. Increased airway inflammatory cells in endurance athletes: what do they mean?

Background Inflammatory cells are increased in the airways of end urance athletes, but their role in causing exercise-induced respiratory symptoms and bronchoconstriction, or their possible long-term consequences, are uncertain. Aim To put the results of athlete studies in perspective, by analysing the pathogenesis of airway cell changes and their impact on respiratory function. Results Athletes of different endurance sports at rest showed increased airway neutrophils. Signal processing procedures for the evaluation of the cardiovascular effects in the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

A new index, the cross-power index (CPI), is proposed to quantify the severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in terms of its cardiovascular effects. On the basis of the influences that recurring drops in oxygen saturation have on systolic blood pressure variability of OSAS patients, CPI is defined as the integral of the cross-spectrum modulus between systolic blood pressure and oxygen saturation. In a test group of 22 subjects, CPI correctly identified all 15 OSAS patients included in the pool. Like other serpin-enzyme complexes (SECs), proteinase-complexed C1 inhibitor (C1-INH) is rapidly cleared from the circulation and thought to be a neutrophil chemoattractant, suggesting that complex formation causes structural rearrangements exposing a domain which is recognized by specific cell surface receptors. Electrochemical synthesis of sulfamides.

Herein we demonstrate the first electrochemical synthesis protocol of symmetrical sulfamides directly from anilines and SO2 mediated by iodide. Sulfamides are an emerging functional group in drug design. Highlights are the direct use of SO2 from a stock solution and no necessity of any supporting electrolyte. Overall, the reaction has been demonstrated for 15 examples with yields up to 93%.
