Relationship between Empathy and Cortisol Awakening Response
2016
Reliable Correlational Cuing While Controlling for Most-Recent-Pairing Effects.
2020
Irrelevant aspects of the environment or irrelevant attributes of task-relevant stimuli can have important and reliable effects on behavior. When the specific values of an irrelevant stimulus attribute are correlated with different responses, a correlational-cuing effect is observed: faster and more accurate responses when the correlation is positive than when it is negative. Previous work has shown that this effect is not due to simple differences in how often the specific stimuli are being presented, and most explanations of the effect have stressed the clear parallels with classical associative learning. Very recently, however, evidence in favor of an alternative model has been presented…
Automated scoring of teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge : a comparison between human and machine scoring
2020
To validly assess teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), performance-based tasks with open-response formats are required. Automated scoring is considered an appropriate approach to reduce the resource-intensity of human scoring and to achieve more consistent scoring results than human raters. The focus is on the comparability of human and automated scoring of PCK for economics teachers. The answers of (prospective) teachers (N = 852) to six open-response tasks from a standardized and validated test were scored by two trained human raters and the engine “Educational SCoRIng Toolkit” (ESCRITO). The average agreement between human and computer ratings, κw = 0.66, suggests a convergent …
Synthetic Inertia Impact on Inter-Area Oscillations of the Continental Europe Power System
2020
The overall kinetic energy reduction due to increasing share of converter-interfaced generation (CIG) has been investigated so far by several works for systems of different types and sizes. The so called synthetic inertia is one of the most common and reviewed solutions to the issue of system inertia reduction. The paper investigates the effects of synthetic inertia as frequency service provided by the CIG sources for the Continental Europe (CE) synchronous area using a detailed large scale dynamic model. The model - provided in the basic form by the System Protection & Dynamics (SP&D) group of the ENTSOE - is properly developed substituting a determined amount of synchronous machin…
Global investments in pandemic preparedness and COVID-19: development assistance and domestic spending on health between 1990 and 2026
2023
Background The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic; characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic; and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected ne…
Sull’attuazione degli obblighi internazionali di risposta e ripresa a fronte della pandemia di Covid-19: una prospettiva italiana
2023
This work aims at offering a critical analysis of how Italy, as one of the most early-affected countries, has responded to and is currently recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, in the framework of international and European obligations applicable to CBRN events at large. To this end, this article will first examine the main obligations concerning «response» to and «recovery» from a pandemic event, as stemming from relevant international and European law instruments. Then, it will look at how these obligations have been implemented by Italian central and local authorities vis-à-vis the Covid-19 pandemic, while also offering some conclusive remarks on the legal meaning of the «disaster mana…
Experimentation of sustainable energy microsystems: The DE.DU.ENER.T. research project
2015
The paper focuses on an energy sustainable prototype micro-system installed upon a roof of a building in Valderice (Italy). This micro-system has been conceived in the ENPI (European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument) cross-border cooperation Italy - Tunisia 2007–2013 DE.DU.ENER.T. (Le DEveloppement DUrable dans la production ENERgetique dans le Territoire) research project framework. The main aim of this project is the construction of a sustainable energy micro-system prototype suitable for the optimal integration and management of renewable energy resources (photovoltaic, wind and solar thermal) and to reduce the building's energy consumption. In the paper the project and the protot…
Development and Preliminary Italian Validation of the Emergency Response and Psychological Adjustment Scale
2021
Evaluating the personal adaptation response to the emergency situations is very important for the prevention of mental distress, for the activation of network and community synergies and for the planning and implementation of appropriate psycho-social interventions. So far there are no short tools for the overall assessment of cognitive, emotional and behavioral responses of psychological adaptation to the emergency in the psychometric panorama. The Emergency Response and Psychological Adjustment Scale (ERPAS) was administered to a sample of 1,088 participants, while the concurrent validity was tested through a second administration to 600 participants along with the GSE (Generalized Self-E…
The optimal dose of ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C: From literature evidence to clinical practice: The optimal dose of ribavirin for chronic hepat…
2010
Approximately 170 million people worldwide are chronically infected by hepatitis C virus (HCV), which can result in progressive hepatic injury and fibrosis, culminating in cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. The benchmark therapy for untreated HCV patients is a combination of pegylated interferon-alpha (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV). Several studies have suggested several potential new approaches to improve HCV therapy-optimization of the dose and duration of RBV therapy, accompanied by careful clinical management, is crucial in ensuring the greatest likelihood of a long response to therapy. RBV causes serious side effects, but in clinical practice, there are no alternatives for the treat…
Effects of a short-term resistance training protocol on risk factors for the metabolic syndrome in the elderly
2016
The metabolic syndrome is strongly associated with negative health outcomes, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and death. The elderly are at particularly high risk of developing the metabolic syndrome, owing to the physiological and behavioural changes associated with aging. The positive influence that resistance training has on the neuromuscular system has long been evident; however, in more recent years, increasing focus has been placed on the role of RT in preventing and treating chronic disease. The majority of studies in the literature suggest that RT has a positive effect on cardiometabolic risk factors. That being said, there remain some inconsistencies. Whether improve…
