A Study of Osmosis Rate Through Several Proton Conducting Polymer Composite Membranes
2021
Carbon dioxide is typically considered to be a byproduct of various industrial processes that should not be released into the environment due to its nature as a harmful greenhouse gas. One of the more promising ways to dispose of it in an economical and environmentally friendly way is by using it as a raw material in electrochemical synthesis reactors. An important part of such reactors is an ion exchange membrane. In this study the influence of ZrO2 content in SPEEK – ZrO2 composite membranes on rate of osmosis trough them was investigated, with the goal of evaluating ZrO2 as an additive for making ion exchange membranes with fine-tuned osmotic permeability.
Eettinen kuluttaminen kulutuskulttuurissa
2016
The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the various meanings of ethical consumption constructed in consumer culture, especially from consumers’ viewpoint. This doctoral thesis belongs to the field of cultural and interpretive consumption research (CCT). The research consists of an introductory essay and three articles, of which two are published in academic journals. The introductory essay presents the general research task, conceptual framework, and methodological choices and discussion to conclude the main results of the dissertation. The research included in this dissertation uses qualitative methods and applies discursive content analysis, geo…
Enhancing a Transition to a Circular Economy in the Water Sector: The EU Project WIDER UPTAKE
2021
A novel approach for resource recovery includes forward osmosis (FO) as a concentration step in municipal wastewater treatment. The current study investigates different pre-treatment strategies including biological treatment with a moving-bed bioreactor (MBBR) at different loading rates and particle removal by filtration and sedimentation. Membrane performance and recovery potential for energy and nutrients were investigated in laboratory-scale FO experiments in batch mode using pre-treated municipal wastewater as feed and 35 g/L NaCl as a draw solution. Initial water fluxes were in the range of 6.3 to 8.0 L/(m2·h). The baseline fluxes were modelled to account for flux decline due to concen…
What is meaningful for responsible shoppers in online fashion retail?
2022
This qualitative study investigates what is meaningful for responsible shoppers in online fashion retail. The study aims to identify and describe these essential themes from the customers’ perspective. The data were collected by interviewing nine self-proclaimed responsible shoppers aged 26–51 years. All participants were female. The findings highlight six meaningful themes for responsible shoppers. These include 1) comprehensive and versatile information; 2) familiar brands and retailers; 3) domesticity; 4) pricing; 5) justification of purchase; and 6) the durability of fashion wear. The study indicates that these meaningful themes are related to the online store characteristics and brands…
Toward Sustainable PLA-Based Multilayer Complexes with Improved Barrier Properties
2019
Poly(lactic acid) or PLA is currently considered as one of the most promising substitutes of conventional plastics, with low environmental impact, especially for food packaging applications. Nevertheless, some drawbacks, such as high permeability to oxygen, are still limiting its industrial applications. The objective of this study was to highly increase the oxygen barrier performance of PLA without compromising its sustainable nature and following the principles of circular economy perspective. Coproducts coming from mill industries, such as wheat gluten proteins (WG), were used to produce PLA-WG-PLA multilayer complexes with improved barrier performance. Different technologies of industri…
