This article examines why it is interesting to have a better knowledge of unit costs in educational systems, and to analyse differences between levels of education, between schools and between countries. It underlines the fact that few studies have been carried out up to now, and that little agreement exists among specialists concerning the methodologies for estimating costs. In spite or these deficiencies in available information, the author reviews existing case studies in France and in the world, and shows that extensive possibilities of improving the cost-effectiveness of ressources allocation still exist. In the face of the changes in the planet's natural resources and of their unequal distribution, it is becoming more urgent that contemporary societies oversee environmental assets in a global manner. Although international directives, when they are transposed into national laws, may set specific objectives, meeting them at the local level is as yet an uneven enterprise. Nevertheless we hope to demonstrate, using a case-study involving local tensions over water resources, that public management of the crisis may be developed that effectively involves the civic society, by using the incentives and enforcement tools of central government and of local institutions.
EVASPA (EVapotranspiration Assessment from SPAce) tool: an overview

International audience; Evapotranspiration (ET) is a fundamental variable of the hydrological cycle and its estimation is required for irrigation management, water resources planning and environmental studies. Remote sensing provides spatially distributed cost-effective information for ET maps production at regional scale. We have developed EVASPA too for mapping ET from remote sensing data at spatial and temporal scales relevant to hydrological or agronomica studies. Bayesian spatio-temporal discard model in a demersal trawl fishery

Spatial management of discards has recently been proposed as a useful tool for the protection of juveniles, by reducing discard rates and can be used as a buffer against management errors and recruitment failure. In this study Bayesian hierarchical spatial models have been used to analyze about 440 trawl fishing operations of two different metiers, sampled between 2009 and 2012, in order to improve our understanding of factors that influence the quantity of discards and to identify their spatio-temporal distribution in the study area.
