Brain Synchrony in Competition and Collaboration During Multiuser Neurofeedback-Based Gaming

2021

EEG hyperscanning during multiuser gaming offers opportunities to study brain characteristics of social interaction under various paradigms. In this study, we aimed to characterize neural signatures and phase-based functional connectivity patterns of gaming strategies during collaborative and competitive alpha neurofeedback games. Twenty pairs of participants with no close relationship took part in three sessions of collaborative or competitive multiuser neurofeedback (NF), with identical graphical user interface, using Relative Alpha (RA) power as a control signal. Collaborating dyads had to keep their RA within 5% of each other for the team to be awarded a point, while members of competit…

Comparison of Functional Network Connectivity and Granger Causality for Resting State fMRI Data

2017

Functional network connectivity (FNC) and Granger causality have been widely used to identify functional and effective connectivity for resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. However, the relationship between these two approaches is still unclear, making it difficult to compare results. In this study, we investigate the relationship by constraining the FNC lags and the causality coherences for analyzing resting state fMRI data. The two techniques were applied respectively to examine the connectivity within default mode network related components extracted by group independent component analysis. The results show that FNC and Granger causality provide complementary result…

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis of the brain of pathological gamblers

2018

Purpose . Gambling disorder has been recently reclassified under the category ‘‘substance-related and addictive disorders”. Recent studies performed through functional MRI (fMRI) have shown that the perseverance of some behaviors can alter brain activation [1,2]. In this work we aim at investigating functional connectivity changes in pathological gamblers (PGs) in comparison to healthy controls (HCs) by means of resting state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI). Methods and materials. Thirteen HCs and fourteen PGs were recruited (all right handed males; drugs free; mean age 36 ± 10 yrs). All acquisitions were performed through a 1,5 T MRI scanner using a 8-channels phased-array …

Comments to the paper "do we really need new medical information about the Turin Shroud?".

2015

Abstract Following the interesting arguments raised in a recent letter to the editor, about a paper recently published in this journal, the authors are happy to take a cue from them to clarify some facts that have not been sufficiently treated for space. After a description of the methods used, arguments regarding a blunt trauma on the right shoulder with consequent dislocation, the position of the hands on the pubis with brachial plexus injury, and the wrist nailing that caused retracted thumbs are discussed in detail.

CAMBIAMENTI NEL NETWORK FUNZIONALE DELLA GRATIFICAZIONE DEI GIOCATORI D'AZZARDO PATOLOGICI: STUDIO DI RESTING STATE FMRI

2018

Identification of a Terphenyl Derivative that Blocks the Cell Cycle in the G0−G1 Phase and Induces Differentiation in Leukemia Cells

2006

To further explore the SAR of resveratrol-related trans-stilbene derivatives, here we describe the synthesis of (a) a series of 3,5-dimethoxy analogues in which a variety of substituents were introduced at positions 2', 3', 4', and 5' of the stilbene scaffold and (b) a second group of derivatives (2-phenylnaphthalenes and terphenyls) that incorporate a phenyl ring as a bioisosteric replacement of the stilbene alkenyl bridge. We thoroughly characterized all of the new compounds with respect to their apoptosis-inducing activity and their effects on the cell cycle. One of the new derivatives, 13g, behaved differently from the others, as it was able to block the cell cycle in the G(0)-G(1) phas…

Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Brain Tumor Surgical Planning: Feasibility in Clinical Setting.

2019

The aim of this study was to introduce resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rest-fMRI) capability for brain tumor surgical planning. rest-fMRI is an emerging functional neuroimaging technique potentially able to provide new insights into brain physiology and to provide useful information regarding brain tumors in preoperative and postoperative settings. rest-fMRI evaluates low-frequency fluctuations in the blood oxygen level–dependent signal while the subject is at rest during magnetic resonance imaging examination. Multiple resting-state networks have been identified, including the somatosensory, language, and visual networks, which are of primary importance for surgical pl…

The "Neurocentric" Approach to Essential Hypertension: How Reliable is the Paradigm of Hyperkinetic Hypertension? A Focus on the Sympathetic Nervous …

2017

BACKGROUND: Clinic resting heart rate (RHR), is one of the cardiovascular parameters more easily measurable. In the general population RHR has been associated with total and cardiovascular mortality and higher rate of vascular events. OBJECTIVE: The case of essential hypertension is in some ways peculiar: in the past decades has often been attributed to hypertensive subjects higher values of RHR than healthy controls as a result of the effects of the different factors leading to the development of essential hypertension itself, first of all the presence of an increased tone of the sympathetic nervous system Methods: Several excellent articles debated the issue of autonomic dysfunction in es…
