Long-term expression of differentiated functions in hepatocytes cultured in three-dimensional collagen matrix.

Hepatocytes entrapped in collagen gel and cultured in serum-free conditions survived longer than cells cultured on plastic (5 days vs. 3 weeks), showed fewer signs of early cell senescence (no increase in c-fos oncoprotein expression), and maintained the expression of differentiated hepatic metabolic functions over a longer period of time. Cells cultured in collagen gels retained their ability to respond to hormones. The insulin-stimulated glycogen synthesis rate remained fairly constant during 18 days in culture (between 5.4 +/- 0.37 and 9 +/- 2.7 nmol glucose/h/microg DNA). Evidence for a role of inducible nitric oxide synthase in gastric relaxation of mdx mice

Alterations of gastric mechanical activity have been reported in mdx mouse, animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This study examined if alterations in the vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) system are present in mdx stomach. Gastric mechanical activity was recorded in vitro as changes of endoluminal pressure and neurally or pharmacologically evoked relaxations were analysed in mdxvs normal stomach. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to detect inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. COVID-19 in people living with HIV: Clinical implications of dynamics of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT Background Little evidence on COVID‐19 in people living with HIV (PLWH) is currently available. Material and Methods We reported clinical and viro‐immunological data of all HIV‐positive patients admitted to our centre with COVID‐19 from March 1 to May 12,2020. Results Overall, five patients were included: all were virologically‐suppressed on antiretroviral therapy and CD4+ count was >350 cell/mm3 in all but two patients. Although all patients had evidence of pneumonia on admission, only one developed respiratory failure. Echinostoma caproni: Differential tegumental responses to growth in compatible and less compatible hosts

Abstract The topography of the tegument of Echinostoma caproni adults collected from high (mice) and low (rats) compatible hosts was compared by SEM. In the oral (OS) and the ventral sucker (VS) areas, a worm age–host species interaction was found with regard to the density of spines. There was a decrease in the density of spines in the adults collected from mice, whereas an increase occurred in the OS area in worms from rats over time. It was shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) could modulate factors involved in tissue vascularization. Increase in transmitted resistance to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors among newly diagnosed HIV-1 infections in Europe

Background: One out of ten newly diagnosed patients in Europe was infected with a virus carrying a drug resistant mutation. We analysed the patterns over time for transmitted drug resistance mutations (TDRM) using data from the European Spread program.Methods: Clinical, epidemiological and virological data from 4317 patients newly diagnosed with HIV-1 infection between 2002 and 2007 were analysed.
