Surface Topographies of Glaucoma Drainage Devices and Their Influence on Human Tenon Fibroblast Adhesion
2010
PURPOSE. This study was performed to investigate the surface topography of different glaucoma drainage devices and to determine the effects of surface roughness on cell adhesion of cultured human tenon fibroblasts.METHODS. The surface topography of four widely used devices (Ahmed FP7 and Ahmed S-2; New World Medical, Inc., Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Baerveldt BG101-350; Advanced Medical Optics, Irvine, CA; and Molteno S1; Molteno Ophthalmic Ltd., Dunedin, New Zealand) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and roughness was quantified by white-light confocal microscopy. Cells were grown for 72 hours on the surfaces of implants affixed to standard culture dishes. The cells were labeled…
Irregularity of the posterior corneal surface during applanation using a curved femtosecond laser interface and microkeratome cutting head.
2012
PURPOSE: To evaluate the irregularity of the posterior corneal surface and intrastromal dissection during the preparation of donor tissue for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) using a curved interface femtosecond laser and microkeratome. METHODS: Sixteen human donor corneas unsuitable for transplantation were divided into two groups: a femtosecond (FS) laser group (n=7) using the VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec) and a microkeratome group (n=9) using the Amadeus II microkeratome (Ziemer Ophthalmic Group). The corneas were fixed on artificial anterior chambers. Horizontal cross-sections were obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography…
The deubiquitinating enzyme CYLD regulates the differentiation and maturation of thymic medullary epithelial cells.
2014
The cross talk between thymocytes and the thymic epithelium is critical for T-cell development and the establishment of central tolerance. Medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) are located in the thymic medulla and mediate the elimination of self-reactive thymocytes, thereby preventing the onset of autoimmunity. Previous studies identified the deubiquitinating enzyme CYLD as a critical regulator of T-cell development by activating proximal T-cell receptor signaling during the transition of double-positive to single-positive thymocytes. Here we evaluated the impact of the naturally occurring short-splice variant of the cyld gene (sCYLD) on the development and maturation of mTECs. We foun…
Embryonic and foetal Islet-1 positive cells in human hearts are also positive to c-Kit.
2011
During embryogenesis, the mammalian heart develops from a primitive heart tube originating from two bilateral primary heart fields located in the lateral plate mesoderm. Cells belongings to the pre-cardiac mesoderm will differentiate into early cardiac progenitors, which express early transcription factors which are also common to the Isl-1 positive cardiac progenitor cells isolated from the developing pharyngeal mesoderm and the foetal and post-natal mice hearts. A second population of cardiac progenitor cells positive to c-Kit has been abundantly isolated from adult hearts. Until now, these two populations have been considered two different sets of progenitor cells present in the heart in…
Information and Communication Technologies to Support Early Screening of Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review
2021
The aim of this systematic review is to identify recent digital technologies used to detect early signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in preschool children (i.e., up to six years of age). A systematic literature search was performed for English language articles and conference papers indexed in Pubmed, PsycInfo, ERIC, CINAHL, WoS, IEEE, and ACM digital libraries up until January 2020. A follow-up search was conducted to cover the literature published until December 2020 for the usefulness and interest in this area of research during the Covid-19 emergency. In total, 2427 articles were initially retrieved from databases search. Additional 481 articles were retrieved from follow-up searc…
Verification of a commercial implementation of the Macro-Monte-Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm using the virtual accelerator approach.
2009
Abstract In this work, the accuracy of the implementation of the Macro Monte Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm into the radiation therapy treatment planning system Eclipse is evaluated. This implementation – called eMC – uses a particle source based on the Rotterdam Initial Phase-Space model. A three-dimensional comparison of eMC calculated dose to dose distributions resulting from full treatment head simulations with the Monte Carlo code package EGSnrc is performed using the ‘virtual accelerator’ approach. Calculated dose distributions are compared for a homogeneous tissue equivalent phantom and a water phantom with air and bone inhomogeneities. The performance of the eMC algorithm…
Evaluating the effectiveness and risks of oral anticoagulant treatments in multimorbid frail older subjects with atrial fibrillation using the multid…
2018
Background: Previous studies suggested that a different risk of mortality may influence the oral anticoagulant prescription in older patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Recently, the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI) demonstrated a high grade of accuracy, calibration and feasibility to predict mortality in hospitalized and community-dwelling older people. Prognostic information, as calculated by the MPI, however, is not included in the decision algorithm of treatments in older patients with AF Purpose: The aim of this international multicenter prospective observational study was to evaluate whether a different prognostic profile, as determined by the MPI, is associated with differ…
Dental management of patients taking novel oral anticoagulants (NOAs): Dabigatran
2017
Background A new group of oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban and edoxaban) with clear advantages over classic dicoumarin oral anticoagulants (warfarin and acenocoumarol) has been developed in recent years. Patients being treated with oral anticoagulants are at higher risk for bleeding when undergoing dental treatments. Material and methods A literature search was conducted through April 2016 for publications in the ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed and Cochrane Library using the keywords "dabigatran", "rivaroxaban", "apixaban", "edoxaban", "new oral anticoagulants", "novel oral anticoagulants", "bleeding" and "dental treatment". Results There is no need for regular coagulatio…
Apixaban and oral implications
2014
Background: Thrombotic disorders remain a leading cause of death in the Western world, and in this regard a number of anticoagulation treatment have been used, including heparins, fondaparinux, vitamin K antagonists (warfarin, acenocoumarol), and new oral anticoagulants such as apixaban. For years there has been great controversy regarding the use of anticoagulants in planning dental treatments that imply bleeding. The main concerns about using new oral anticoagulants in invasive dental procedures are bleeding due to the lack of an antidote, and the thrombotic risk of the disease for which anticoagulation was indicated in the first place. Material and Methods: A literature search was conduc…
Serum surfactant protein D is a potential biomarker of lung damage in systemic sclerosis
2016
Background: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) complicates the course of systemic sclerosis (SSc) up to two-third of the cases, representing the main cause of death in these patients. Assessment of lung involvement by HRCT and close monitoring of lung function are mandatory. At present no serologic biomarkers are validated for the assessment for lung damage in SSc. The current study was designed to test the hypothesis that the levels of surfactant are altered in SSc compared to healthy controls. To this aim serum levels of SP-A (Surfactant Protein A) and SP-D (Surfactant Protein-D) in serum were assessed. Methods: We enrolled 12 consecutive patients (M/F: 2/10) affected by scleroderma referred…
