Unite against: A common threat invokes spontaneous decategorization between social categories

2019

Abstract A frequent rhetoric in the political arena calls members of larger groups like nations to lay aside all dividing differences and unite in face of a common threat. In the present research we sought to test whether such a unifying effect of external threat already manifests in such basic cognitive processes as automatic categorization even for such strong schisms as the ones between black and white Americans or Israeli Jews and Arabs. In Studies 1 & 2 (N = 183/144, USA), we established the decategorization effect in the context of black and white US Americans. In Study 3, we showed the effect again in a German lab for the gender category (N = 101). In Study 4 (N = 168, Israel), we tr…

High-quality 10 and 20 GHz repetition rate optical sources based on the spectral phase tailoring of a temporal sinusoidal phase modulation

2019

International audience; We theoretically introduce and experimentally demonstrate a new approach to generate high-quality, high repetition-rate pulse trains. This method is based on a temporal sinusoidal phase modulation combined with a triangular spectral phase shaping. Experimental results validate the concept at repetition rates of 10 and 20 GHz.

“The Rhetoric of Nationalism in Emerson’s ‘The American Scholar’”

2001

This article studies the nationalistic rhetoric in Emerson’s “The American Scholar.” It argues that if the current critical tendency to downplay the essay’s nationalism can be seen as a welcome corrective to certain traditional readings, the address, in fact, includes a significant presence of embedded nationalistic rhetoric that has largely been ignored. The study focuses on Emerson ’s incorporation of the language of expansionism and imperialism, his adoption of an ahistorical perspective and his use of the vocabulary of action, heroism and Anglo-Saxonism to show that both the address’s nationalistic rhetoric and Emerson ’s complicity in the nationalistic ideology of his time are more pro…

Epistemic Modality Markers in European and American Law Journals

2013

Over the last decades the attention of scholars working in the filed of social sciences has been directed towards language variation, and discourse analysis has increasingly evolved as a valuable way of understanding the use of language in a variety of academic, institutional and professional settings (Clyne 1994; Flowerdew & Gotti 2006; Bhatia et al. 2008). According to the sociolinguist approach, genres become ‘dynamically rhetorical structures’ that can be manoeuvred according to the discipline’s norms, values and ideology, both historically and incrementally changing as disciplinary knowledge and genres required and created by discourse communities’ change (Bhatia 2004; Hyland 2004,…

O wizerunkowości sfery publicznej i jej analizie retorycznej

2016

Rozdział wstępny zawiera omówienie pojęcia wizerunek medialny i uzasadnienie mnogości perspektyw badawczych w odniesieniu do wizerunkowości. Jednym z najważniejszych motywów wzrostu zainteresowania wizerunkowością jest medializacja sfery publicznej, a więc i celowe, strategiczne kreowanie i używanie wizerunków w komunikacji publicznej.

Consumers' attitudes toward mobile advertising : a rhetorical approach

2015

Mobile advertising adoption has not been as rapid as it could have been, even though the techniques for its full exploitation have existed for years. Understanding consumers’ attitudes toward the phenomenon is crucial in order to enhance the situation. The purpose of this research was to examine young consumers’ perceptions about mobile advertising in order to clarify what type of meanings they give to the phenomenon, what kind of argumentation means are found and in which contexts it is evaluated positive or negative. The theoretical framework of this research is based on the principals of rhetorical social psychology (Billig 1987/1996). The data of this study was gathered by using the met…

I dispositivi fototestuali autobiografici. Retoriche e verità

2014

The body fables in Babrius, Fab. 134 and 1 Corinthians 12: Hierarchic or democratic leadership in crisis management?

2021

Body metaphors and body fables were frequently used in ancient discourse for social communities and politics. This article will examine a body fable by the Greek fabulist Babrius (Babrius, Fab . 134) that has been overlooked in research so far. It shows a remarkable similarity to 1 Corinthians 12 through the use of central terms such as σῶμα and μέλος or personified speaking body parts such as an eye and head. Even if no literary direct dependence is claimed, the text, which was written at about the same time as 1 Corinthians, sheds light on Paul’s understanding of the body fable. It becomes apparent, however, that the rhetorical function is fundamentally different in the two texts. Whilst …

There's Nothing Bulldog about Britain Anymore: The Rise and Fall of the Bulldog Spirit

2019

This paper explores the British national icon, the English Bulldog, and its symbolic connotations with spirited and determined courage. In charting the usage of the bulldog for propaganda purposes, it suggests that although the use of the bulldog is not as fashionable as it once was, it is nevertheless a firmly fixed British cultural icon used for propaganda, as it was demonstrated in the referendum campaign over the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union.
