Role of the antioxidant defence system and telomerase in arsenic-induced genomic instability

Arsenic (AS) is a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-inducer carcinogen, whose mode of action is still unclear. To defend against ROS, cells use enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Failure of antioxidant systems (AXS) can result in dicentric chromosomes formation as well as telomere associations for the reduced activity of telomerase. Plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids are directly associated with cognition in overweight children but not in normal weight children

Aim Polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential nutrients for the normal development of the brain. We investigated the associations between plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids and cognition in normal weight and overweight children. Methods The study recruited 386 normal weight children and 58 overweight children aged six to eight years and blood samples were drawn after a 12-hour fast. We assessed plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids using gas chromatography, cognition using Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices, and overweight and obesity using the age-specific and sex-specific cut-offs from the International Obesity Task Force. The Achilles tendon is a common tendon for the medial and lateral gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Non‐uniform Achilles tendon regional displacements have been observed in vivo which may result from non‐uniform muscle loading and intratendinous shearing. However, prior observations are limited to the sagittal plane. Bilateral ruptures of the extensor mechanism of the knee: A systematic review

Abstract Introduction We conduct a systematic and qualitative review of the current literature to evaluate studies that described bilateral ruptures of the extensor mechanism of the knee. Methods A comprehensive literature search was performed to evaluate all studies included in the literature until September 2016. Results Fourteen studies with a total of 44 patients met the inclusion criteria. There were 14 patients with CRF (61%), 6 patients were affected by diabetes mellitus (14%) while other 6 patients were obese patients (14%). Conclusion CRF represents the most frequent comorbidity in patients with bilateral quadriceps/patellar tendon ruptures.
