The study of the “Lusitanian robbery” led to an important research since the late nineteenth century.Nevertheless, and despite a gradual shift in modern historiography towards a more nuanced approachto the origin of the phenomenon, the problem of land still remains a central concern of many historiansand archaeologists. From a close discussion of the main passages of Livy, Diodorus and Appian especiallyrelating to the relationship that some have sought to establish between lack and / or poverty ofthe land and development of robbery among the Lusitanians, it gives a review of the socio-economicinterpretation.
From pedologic indications to archaeological reconstruction: deciphering land use in the Islamic period in the Baida district (north-western Sicily)

Abstract The aim of this work was to detect imprints on soil properties from former Islamic land use (9th to 11th century) using a multi-method, soil-chemical approach. Four soil profiles (with buried horizons) found in the vicinities of former Islamic settlements in Sicily were analysed for phosphorus (total, organic and inorganic), nitrogen (total, NO 3 − and NH 4 + ), carbon compounds (δ 13 C, lipids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and functional groups), physical and chemical C-fractions and the state of soil weathering. Detection of Water Stress in an Olive Orchard with Thermal Remote Sensing Imagery

An investigation of the detection of water stress in non-homogeneous crop canopies such as orchards using high-spatial resolution remote sensing thermal imagery is presented. An airborne campaign was conducted with the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) acquiring imagery in 38 spectral bands in the 0.43–12.5 mm spectral range at 2.5 m spatial resolution. The AHS sensor was flown at 7:30, 9:30 and 12:30 GMT in 25 July 2004 over an olive orchard with three different water-deficit irrigation treatments to study the spatial and diurnal variability of temperature as a function of water stress.
