Revisiting the metallothionein genes polymorphisms and the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma in a Brazilian population
2020
Background Metallothioneins (MTs) gene polymorphisms have been associated with the ability of free radical scavenging and detoxification of heavy metals leading to cancer development. Our aim was to revisit, in a Brazilian population, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the MT gene family previously associated with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Material and Methods A case-control investigation with 28 OSCC patients and 45 controls was conducted, using conventional risk factors (tobacco use and alcohol consumption) as covariates. SNPs genotyping for rs8052334 (MT1B), rs964372 (MT1B), and rs1610216 (MT2A) was performed by PCR-RFLP, and SNPs for rs11076161 (MT1A) were analyzed by …
Periodontitis as a risk factor for head and neck cancer
2020
Background Periodontitis may be associated with the development of head and neck cancer (HNC). A literature review was conducted to understand the possible association between them. Material and Methods Articles published in the PubMed database from January 1999 and May 2020 were retrieved. Limitations of the studies and biological mechanisms were discussed. Results A total of 4,232 articles were found. Of these, 13 were analyzed according to inclusion criteria. Most papers found some association between periodontitis and HNC, although differences in periodontal evaluation, sample size, study design and tumor sites were observed. Porphyromonas gingivalis appears to increase the chance of bo…
What is the prognostic importance of lymphovascular space invasion in the absence of lymph node metastasis for early-stage endometrial cancer?
2021
Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the prognostic role of lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI), evaluated in a semi-quantitative fashion on prognosis of early stage, low risk endometrial cancer (EC). Methods: We enrolled patients who underwent surgery for endometrial cancer between 2003 and 2018 in two referral cancer center. All patients had endometrioid EC, G1–G2, with myometrial invasion <50%, and no lymph-node involvement. LVSI was analyzed in a semi-quantitative way, according to a 3-tiered scoring system in absent, focal and substantial. Results: Among 524 patients, any positive LVSI was found in 57 patients (10.9%) with focal LVSI (n=35, 6.7%) and substantial LVSI (n=2…
A Pooled Analysis of Extremely Low-Frequency Magnetic Fields and Childhood Brain Tumors
2010
Pooled analyses may provide etiologic insight about associations between exposure and disease. In contrast to childhood leukemia, no pooled analyses of childhood brain tumors and exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs) have been conducted. The authors carried out a pooled analysis based on primary data (1960–2001) from 10 studies of ELF-MF exposure and childhood brain tumors to assess whether the combined results, adjusted for potential confounding, indicated an association. The odds ratios for childhood brain tumors in ELF-MF exposure categories of 0.1–<0.2 μT, 0.2–<0.4 μT, and ≥0.4 μT were 0.95 (95% confidence interval: 0.65, 1.41), 0.70 (95% CI: 0.40, 1.22), and 1.1…
Risk of pancreatic malignancy and mortality in branch-duct IPMNs undergoing surveillance: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2016
Abstract Background Safety of non-operative management for low-risk branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (BD-IPMNs) is debated. Aim To perform a systematic review/meta-analysis to determine their risk of developing pancreatic malignancy and of pancreatic malignancy-related deaths. Methods A MEDLINE search was performed and methodology was based on PRISMA statement. Incidence rates of overall pancreatic malignancy, malignant BD-IPMN, IPMN-distinct PDAC, and of pancreatic malignancy-related death rates were calculated by dividing the total number of events by the total number of person-years (pyrs) of follow-up. Heterogeneity was determined by I2 statistic. Results 20 studies …
Histopathologic risk factors in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma variants: An update with special reference to HPV-related carcinomas
2014
Accurate identification of the microscopic risk factors of oral and oropharyngeal (OP) squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and their morphologic variants is of at most importance, as these generally determine treatment modalities, prognosis and overall patient outcome. The great majority of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas are microscopically described as kerartinizing squamous cell carcinoma (KSCC). They bear certain resemblance to keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Tobacco habits and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages have been considered to be the main etiologic agents in these carcinomas. The tumors occurred in older patients more commonly affected the oral…
Redox imbalances in ageing and metabolic alterations: Implications in cancer and cardiac diseases. An overview from the working group of cardiotoxici…
2020
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a well established risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) diseases. In addition, several studies indicate that MetS correlates with the increased risk of cancer in adults. The mechanisms linking MetS and cancer are not fully understood. Several risk factors involved in MetS are also cancer risk factors, such as the consumption of high calorie-food or high fat intake, low fibre intake, and sedentary lifestyle. Other common aspects of both cancer and MetS are oxidative stress and inflammation. In addition, some anticancer treatments can induce cardiotoxicity, including, for instance, left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and heart failure (HF), endothelial dysfunction an…
351 Substantial lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI) as predictor of distant relapse and poor prognosis in low-risk early stage endometrial cancer
2020
Objective To evaluate the prognostic role of LVSI, evaluated in a semi-quantitative fashion on prognosis of early stage, low risk endometrial cancer (EC). Methods We enrolled patients who underwent surgery for EC between 2003 and 2018 in two referral cancer center. All patients had endometrioid EC, G1-G2, with myometrial invasion Results Among 524 patients, any positive LVSI was found in 57 patients (10.9%) with 6.7% (n=35) focal LVSI and 4.2% (n=22) substantial LVSI. Substantial LVSI was associated to higher rate of G2 (p Conclusions Substantial LVSI represents the strongest independent risk factor for decreased survival and distant relapse, indicating a role for potential hematogenous dis…
Hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers in patients with periodontitis : a systematic review and meta-analysis
2019
Background Numerous studies have explored the correlation of periodontal disease (PD) with risk of hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers, but the findings were inconsistent. Therefore, we did a meta-analysis to ascertain the correlation of PD with risk of incident hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers. Material and Methods The authors searched relevant studies in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and MEDLINE). The summary relative risk (RR) along with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated by use of random or fixed effects models. Results Six studies were included in qualitative synthesis. The pooled analysis revealed that PD was significantly associated with an increased risk of hematopo…
Tumor Size, an Additional Risk Factor of Local Recurrence in Low-Risk Endometrial Cancer: A Large Multicentric Retrospective Study.
2018
ObjectiveThe identification of patients with endometrial cancer (EC) at higher risk for relapse is critical to individualize and better tailor postoperative treatment. No evidence is available regarding the possible association between tumor size (TS) and the risk of local recurrence. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between TS and risk/type of recurrence in EC patients, stratified according to the new European Society of Medical Oncology-European Society of Gynecological Oncology-European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology classification.MethodsData of patients with histologically proven EC who received primary surgical treatment between November 1999 and June 20…
