‘Strong and courageous’ but ‘constantly insecure’: dialogical self theory, intersecting identities, and Christian mixed martial arts

Being a mixed martial arts fighter and a devout Christian seems to present an apparent contradiction that requires identity work to bring these identities into unity. We used Dialogical Self Theory and explored the autobiography of Ron ‘H2O’ Waterman, a professional fighter turned evangelist, to understand how the tensions between the different identities or I-positions were negotiated. We identified two I-positions, ‘Ron the Fighter’ and ‘Ron the Pater Familias’, which related differently to religion, sport, and masculinity. Previous studies of communication apprehension have extensively examined its characteristics in the intercultural context of mostly the USA and Eastern Asians cultures. Discussions revolving around cyborgs seldom include aesthetics, let alone propose aesthetics as an inextricable part of the phenomenon of the cyborg. Rather, the term “cyborg”, a contraction of “cybernetic organism”, evokes a figure of the (hu)man- machine. Managers’ Moral Struggle : A Case Study on Ethical Dilemmas and Ethical Decision-making in the Context of Immigration

This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkittiin X- ja Y-mediasukupolvien käsityksiä terveysviestinnän luotettavuudesta ja ristiriitaisuudesta internetissä. Tutkimuksen tutkimuskysymykset olivat: 1. Mistä asioista kokemus terveysviestinnän luotettavuudesta syntyy? Sekä 2. Miten ristiriitaiseen terveysviestintään suhtaudutaan? Tutkimuskysymyksiä tutkittiin vertailevasti X- ja Y-mediasukupolvien välillä. Lisäksi tarkoituksena oli selvittää, eroavatko terveysviestintään kohdistuvat käsitykset kahden mediasukupolven välillä.
