Design of a Virtual Learning Environment for Students with Special Needs

The European Social Fund-supported Portland Partnership project developed a computer-based virtual learning environment (VLE) to benefit students with cognitive and physical disabilities. This system provided students with access to a suite of software programs to teach them basic/essential skills needed for everyday life and to use information and communications technology (ICT). Are Virtues Shaped by National Cultures or Religions?

The present paper examines the relative influence of religion and nation on conceptions of virtues. In a first study, conducted in the Netherlands, 926 respondents of different profession, age, sex, and religious background rank ordered a list of 15 virtues. A comparison of Dutch Muslims and non-Muslims showed a remarkably high resemblance in their ratings of virtues. Only faith was rated as being much more important by Muslims than by non-Muslims. In the second study, the influence of national cultures was examined. Molecular Basis of SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1-Induced Immune Translational Shutdown as Revealed by All-Atom Simulations.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic represents the most severe global health crisis in modern human history. One of the major SARS-CoV-2 virulence factors is nonstructural protein 1 (Nsp1), which, outcompeting with the binding of host mRNA to the human ribosome, triggers a translation shutdown of the host immune system. Here, microsecond-long all-atom simulations of the C-terminal portion of the SARS-CoV-2/SARS-CoV Nsp1 in complex with the 40S ribosome disclose that SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1 has evolved from its SARS-CoV ortholog to more effectively hijack the ribosome by undergoing a critical switch of Q/E158 and E/Q159 residues that perfects Nsp1's interactions…

Virskorekcijas pielietojamība tuvredzības progresijas novērtēšanā ortokeratoloģijas pacientiem

Darbs ir uzrakstīts angļu valodā uz 93 lapaspusēm. Tas satur 49 attēlus, 24 tabulas un 95 atsauces uz literatūras avotiem. Šī darba mērķis ir pārbaudīt, vai virskorekcija ir derīga metode tuvredzības progresēšanas novērtēšanai ortokeratoloģijā. Hipotēze ir atrast lielākas izmaiņas gados jaunākiem pacientiem nekā pieaugušajiem, kā tas ir norādīts literatūrā. Pētījumā iekļauti 192 Eiropeīdās rases subjekti vecumā no 6 līdz 56 gadiem (vidēji 19,61±10,30). Izmantojot retrospektīvu analīzi, no objektīva BOZR kontaktlēcas parametra tiek iegūta virskorekcija (ORX). Jaunākiem cilvēkiem ir lielākas ORX vērtības, bet pieaugušajiem nav atšķirības (p<0,05).
