Background The retrotransverse foramen is a nonmetric variant of C1 that consists of an abnormal accessory foramen on the posterior root of the transverse process. Case Description During a study on the prevalence of the retrotransverse foramen in 150 dry C1 vertebrae, we observed an exceptional C1 (0.67%) with a right double retrotransverse foramen of the 14 C1 vertebrae (9.3%). In order to quantify the time course of auditory P3-related gamma activity, root mean square (RMS) values were calculated from band-filtered (30-45 Hz) target and non-target responses in an auditory oddball experiment. A case is presented in which endodontic treatment of a maxillary lateral incisor with a talon cusp and two root canals failed following a mistaken diagnosis. What was first diagnosed as an endodontic lesion was, in all probability, a primary periodontal lesion caused by the advance of bacteria from the gingival crevice to the apex along the radicular groove between the main tooth and the talon cusp.
