Heterogeneity at the Glass Transition: Translational and Rotational Self-Diffusion
1997
Self-diffusion coefficients, D, have been measured in the glass forming liquids salol, glycerol, phenolphthaleine dimethyl ether (PDE), cresolphthaleine dimethyl ether (CDE), and ααβ-trinaphthylbenzene (TNB) in the supercooled regime. The NMR static magnetic field gradient technique was applied where D >10-14 m2 s-1 can be attained. The results are similar to previous diffusion experiments where an enhancement of translational diffusion was found in comparison with rotational diffusion and shear viscosity. Various models of spatial heterogeneity are related to a phenomenological environmental fluctuation model in view of recent diffusion and relaxation data close to the glass transition.

2014
Rubber Forming Processes of Thin Sheets
1999
In the last decade flexible media have been increasingly utilized in sheet metal drawing processes in order to reduce the tooling cost and to improve the product quality. In the present paper an axisymmetric deep drawing process of thin steel sheets is taken into account: in particular a flexible pad is utilized in order to simplify the tooling set. The process mechanics is investigated through numerical simulations and experimental tests with the aim to find out a proper set of operative parameters allowing the stamping of sound components and to highlight the particular deformation path of the drawing cup. The comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental verification …
Applied study on the rotational molding and processing technology of rotational molds
2021
Computer-aided manufacturing involves a set of computerized activities related to the preparation, launch and follow-up of manufacturing. Computer-aided manufacturing is a tool that allows the use of 3D models based on computer-aided design. This paper addresses the process of rotational formation, with an effective focus on the technology of processing a rotational mold using CAM simulation as a research method. In this sense, the right choice of CNC and cutting tools is essential. The use of numerically controlled machine tools and high-performance cutting tools reduces the number of operations. The manufacturing route realized is specific to the parts machining on numerical control machi…
The evolution in time of the concept of fast growing tree species: is it possible to use a definition applicable to all environmental conditions?
2020
Although the expression “fast-growing species” (FGS) referred to tree species has been since long time used, a clear definition has not been adopted for decades. Starting from the Italian historical background, we searched for the definitions of FGS formulated over time at a national and international level. The mean annual increment (MAI) of 10 m3 ha-1, identified by the FAO, has been the most commonly considered threshold until recently. Subsequently, experimental activities and research efforts have consistently enhanced the productivity of FGS, and other definitions have been proposed accordingly. Hence, FGS should provide annual wood yields of 15-25 m3 ha-1 with rotations of less than …
Particle-size distribution and associated organic matter under different cropping systems and tillage practices in a semi arid environment.
2008
The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term impact of different management practice and tillage tools on :1) changes in soil carbon stock with different cropping systems and soil tillage managements; 2) aggregate size distribution and organic carbon concentration of each fraction; 3) organic matter composition and stability Methodology The research was carried out at the Pietranera farm, located in southern part of central Sicily (Italy) (37°32’74” N / 13°31’53” E; elevation 236 m; mean annual precipitation 481 mm; mean air temperature 19 °C) on a soil of a long term experiment. The soil is classified as a fine-clayey, calcareous, mixed, xeric Chromic Pelloxerert with a slope of 4%.…
Understanding paleomagnetic rotations in Sicily: thrust vs. strike-slipe tectonics
2018
The paleomagnetic investigation of the western Sicily Maghrebian belt has revealed since the 1970s that large clockwise (CW) rotations up to 140° with respect to the Hyblean-African foreland occurred synchronous with Tertiary shortening of the chain. The observation that rotations decrease stepwise from internal to external tectono-stratigraphic units led in the 1990s to a widely accepted model postulating that rotational thrust-sheet emplaced during forward orogenic propagation. More recently, other authors suggested that CW rotations from Sicily are conversely the result of late orogenic dextral strike-slip tectonics. Here we report on a paleomagnetic investigation of 30 Jurassic-Eocene s…
Understanding paleomagnetic rotations in Sicily: Thrust vs. transpressive structures
2016
Since the 1970s, paleomagnetic data collected in Sicily have documented large magnitude clockwise (CW) rotations around vertical axis with respect to Africa and the Hyblean foreland. Many Authors argued that rotations arise from rotational thrusting of large coherent nappes coinciding with paleogeographic units. In the forward thrust propagation process, each nappe rotates the overlying nappe stack. This would explain the stepwise decrease of rotation magnitudes from the internal Panormide unit (90°-140°) to the external Saccense unit, yielding no rotation. However, other Authors later proposed that rotations of Sicily are the consequence of dextral shear occurring since late Miocene times …
First analyses on a mechanical motion converter to produce electrical energy from sea wave
2020
The exploitation of sea wave opens new horizon for suppling small islanded communities. With this goal the paper propones a prototypical device for the utilization of sea wave along the coastline. The device is based on a mechanical motion conversion, from an alternative rotation into unidirectional rotation in order to run commercial generators. First evaluations are here reported, demonstrating the feasibility of this solution.
Constant Heat Input Friction Stir Welding of Variable Thickness AZ31 Sheets Through In-Process Tool Rotation Control
2019
Tailored blanks characterized by variable thickness were friction stir welded (FSWed) with the aim to obtain constant joint properties along the weld seam, regardless of the thickness change. To pursue this goal, the heat input was kept constant by in-process control of tool rotation. A dedicated numerical model of the process was used to determine the tool rotation values as a function of the sheet thickness. The mechanical properties and the microstructure of the FSWed joints, produced with varying process parameters, were studied. It was found that the proposed approach can produce joints with uniform properties along the weld line in terms of stress–strain curve shape, joint strength, e…
