Violence Against Women from Different Relationship Contexts and Health Care Utilization in Spain
2011
Abstract Background Studies reported an excess of health services utilization among women with violence by an intimate partner (IPV). However, little is known about health utilization by women victims of other forms of interpersonal violence than IPV. This study aimed to determine the effect of violence from different relationship contexts on health care utilization. Methods A cross-sectional study following a multistage cluster sampling scheme was conducted. Women aged 18 to 70 years were randomly selected according to their scheduled health care visit. The number of women invited to participate was 16,419 and 73% accepted. After exclusion, the final sample consisted of 10,815 women. The o…

Successful treatment of condylomata acuminata at the urethral meatus with high-dose ingenol mebutate gel: Report of two cases
2019
Condylomata acuminata (CA), or anogenital warts, is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Treatments for CA generally have suboptimal recurrence rates, which results in a need for repeated treatments and adds to the already negative impact on the patients’ quality of life. CA can present at the urethral meatus, which is a particularly challenging anatomic location from a therapeutic perspective. We report two cases of CA at the urethral meatus successfully treated with topical application of high-dose ingenol mebutate gel.
From telescope to binoculars. Dyadic outcome resulting from psychological counselling for infertile couples undergoing ART
2018
Objective This longitudinal study aims to evaluate the effect of psychological counselling on quality of life, marital satisfaction and need for parenthood in couples undergoing fertility treatments (ART). Background Recent guidelines on the ART suggest that psychological counselling should target both members of the infertile couple in order to improve their conjoint management of the infertility-related stress. However, studies on the dyadic outcome of couples are scarce. Methods 262 patients were originally considered in the study and completed questionnaires on quality of life, need for parenthood and marital satisfaction, before treatment (T1) and at the day of intrauterine inseminatio…
Postherpetic neuralgia and recalcitrant cystic lesions following herpes zoster: A case report and review of treatment options.
2020
Acute herpes zoster lesions in most cases are self-limited except in older and immunocompromised patients, wherein the pain can cause significant suffering. Postherpetic neuralgia is a painful situation for patients that can compromise the quality of life. Here, we report a 30-year-old healthy young man who developed treatment-resistant postherpetic neuralgia after herpes zoster (fourth/fifth thoracic segment) without any underlying immunocompromised state. He also developed some cystic lesions, which were removed by aspiration and surgery. The skin lesions improved 2 weeks after the surgery and postherpetic neuralgia was completely cured after 5 months, however cystic lesions recurred mult…
Depression and social phobia in essential tremor and Parkinson's disease
2017
Background Essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the two most common movement disorders, and tremor is the most visible symptom. Comparative study on ET and PD clinical neuropsychiatric symptoms was performed to assess the impact of emotional state on tremor. Objectives To investigate the most common psychiatric symptoms (depression, anxiety and social phobia) and their correlations with motor symptoms, especially tremor, in ET and PD patients. Materials and Methods This comparative cross-sectional study consisted of neurological examinations, five self-assessment questionnaires (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale [DASS], Beck Depression Inventory [BDI], Social Interaction Anx…
Bone Marrow Findings in Multicentric Castleman Disease in HIV-negative Patients
2007
Because bone marrow histology in multicentric Castleman disease in human immunodeficiency virus-negative patients is not well reported, we investigated sequential bone marrow biopsies of 3 affected human immunodeficiency virus-negative patients, of which one was human herpes virus 8 (HHV8)-positive. The histologic evaluation of the bone marrow revealed lymphoid follicles with regressed germinal centers in 1 patient. Another patient showed tumorlike but bland polyclonal plasmacytosis with large perivascular plasma cell clusters. The HHV8-positive patient revealed interstitial HHV8-positive cells accompanied by a mild plasmacytosis. The atypical lymphoid follicles could be regarded as a bone …
Socio-economic and other correlates of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus seroprevalence among older adults in Sicily.
2009
The virus that causes Kaposi sarcoma, KS-associated herpesvirus (KSHV, also known as human herpesvirus 8) has an unusual distribution and poorly characterized modes of transmission. To clarify these issues, socio-demographic correlates of KSHV seroprevalence were examined in a population-based study. In 1,154 randomly sampled adults (aged 32- 92, mean 71 years) throughout Sicily, KSHV antibodies were detected with four assays and a conservative algorithm. Seroprevalence was re-weighted to the population. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (OR, CI) from multivariate logistic regression were used to estimate associations of seroprevalence with interview data. KSHV seroprevalence was 8.…
Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: When and Why the Cervical Corpectomy?
2020
Background: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a degenerative disease that represents the most common spinal cord disorder in adults. The best treatment option has remained controversial. We performed a prospective study to evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and neurophysiologic outcomes for anterior cervical corpectomy in the treatment of CSM. Methods: From January 2011 to January 2017, 60 patients with CSM were prospectively enrolled in the present study. The patients were divided according to the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association scale (mJOA) score into 2 groups: group A, patients with mild to moderate CSM (mJOA score ≥13); and group B, patients with severe myelopathy (mJ…
Low-density lipoproteins generated during an oral fat load in mild hypertriglyceridemic and healthy subjects are smaller, denser, and have an increas…
2005
Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins generated during the postprandial phase are atherogenic. Large very low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) or chylomicrons (CMs) are not as atherogenic as their remnants (Rem). Small and dense LDLs are associated with cardiovascular disease. Low-density lipoprotein size is partly under genetic control and is considered as a relatively stable LDL feature. In this article, we present data on retinyl palmitate kinetics correlated with the modification of LDL features in terms of size, density, and in vitro receptor binding affinity after an oral fat load. Six nondiabetic, hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) patients and 6 healthy controls were examined. Low-density lipoprotein s…
