Gamma radiation of EVA-AA/MMA swollen systems to obtain mechanically improved blends

2002

In this work a "new" way to obtain "compatibilised" blends of rubber-glassy thermoplastic components is presented. Polyethylen-vinyl acetate acrylic acid terpolymer is swollen by methylmetacrylate and the system is irradiated through gamma rays in order to induce polymerisation of the monomer. Solubility and dynamic mechanical tests indicate the formation of a two phase system, even though in presence of strong interactions between the two components. Mechanical tensile behaviour is that of a ductile material with appreciable modulus values.

Thermomechanical Properties of Radiation-Modified Polyethylene/Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Copolymer/Liquid-Crystalline Copolyester Blends

1999

Radiation-modified blends of high-density polyethylene (PE) with ethylene-propylene-diene copolymer (EPDM; 10-65 wt.%) and thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (LCP; 10 wt.%) were investigated. The LCP was a liquid-crystalline copolyester of 40% poly(ethylene terephthalate) with 60% 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The constituents were blended using a circular extruder, the specimens were prepared by compression molding and irradiated by 60Co γ-radiation up to 200 kGy. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties in wide temperature range were investigated for the irradiated and non-irradiated specimens. The effects of irradiation on the thermomechanical behaviour of the PE matrix are discus…

An investigation on using pre-treated tyre rubber as a replacement of synthetic polymers for bitumen modification

2015

Rubberized bitumen obtained through a swelling process, has widely proven to be a successful technology for asphalt pavement applications and a solution to reduce the dismantling of tyre rubber on landfills. However, this technology presents two main operative issues which needs the adoption of costly special equipment. Firstly, significant high value of High Temperature Viscosity (HTV) which imposes mixing and compaction difficulties and leads to increased energy consumption and emissions. Furthermore, during the hot storage period, phase separation between rubber particles and the base bitumen could occur. Developing Recycled Tyre Rubber Modified Bitumen (RTR-MBs) with improved storage st…

Research of the physical-chemical properties of adhesive radiation-modified thermosetting materials based on polyolefins and their composites

1999

The present paper surveys the investigation results of the adhesive behavior with steel of different polyethylenes (LDPE, HDPE) irradiated with γ-radiation in vacuum, oxygen, and air, using rheological, optical, thermomechanical and other methods. To study the adhesive contact, the technological parameters applicable to thermosetting polymer material were taken into consideration. The results show the suitable methods in order to obtain thermosetting polymer materials with improved adhesive and thermomechanical properties.

1978

For the three different cases (R=polybutadiene, polypropylene oxide and EPDM) the isothermal cloud point curves of the system styrene/polystyrene/rubber (S/PS/R) show that at 25°C a decomposition into two phases occurs already in the presence of a few percents of polystyrene and rubber. By separating the phases (centrifuge) and analysis of coexisting phases, tie lines and thus critical points could be fixed. Evaluation of the results was made on the basis of the Flory and Huggins theory by means of approximations given for such systems by Scott. The interaction parameters resulting for 25°C are well in agreement with literature data—as far as available. By means of the approximations mentio…

Comparison between various bituminous binders modified with crumb tyre rubber

2009

The aim of this paper is to show how the rheology, the performance and the storage stability of different bituminous binders, obtained from two bitumens with different asphaltenes content, change their properties when they are modified with recycled tyre crumb rubber. Physical, chemical and performance characterisation followed by rheological and storage stability analyses have been undertaken as the basis for the comparison. The results of the investigation indicate that bitumen with lower asphaltenes content is more influenced by the modification with the rubber. However, the modification of the bitumen with the higher asphaltenes content gives a binder with better performance and storage…

Softening of Silica Filled Styrene-Butadiene Rubber under Uniaxial Cyclic Loading

2016

Stress-strain behaviour of silica filled styrene-butadiene rubber showed strong hysteresis and cyclic softening, while these effects were almost negligible for the neat rubber. Significant Mullins effect occurs between the first and second loading cycles, whereupon samples reach their steady state after four repeated cycles. The degree of softening increases with volume content of silica characterizing the softening effect as a breakdown of the filler-formed microstructure defined by both, specific interactions in the filler associations and between the filler and rubber matrix. Contribution of different damage mechanisms to the total energy losses on different stages of extension was estim…

Volume Changes in Filled Rubber Under Uniaxial Cyclic Loading

2011

Styrene-butadiene rubber, neat and filled with different silica content was investigated under uniaxial cyclic loading under a constant crosshead speed, with increasing deformation amplitude in subsequent loading cycles. Rubber was investigated in order to evaluate the reversibility of structure rearrangements, occurring in rubber when subjected to cyclic loading. Volume uniformly increases with growing strain and shows hysteresis at unloading. After complete unloading, no residual strain changes are observed. These data are in good conformity with the data of density measurements, which were made on specimens before and after the tests. By correlating data, obtained from volume changes and…
