Therapeutic metaphors and personal meanings in group poetry therapy for people with schizophrenia

This article concerns the therapeutic potential of metaphor in group poetry therapy, concentrating on the poetry therapy process of people diagnosed with schizophrenia. The data was collected in a one-year poetry therapy group. The main questions were: (1) What kind of therapeutic potential can metaphors offer in group poetry therapy? (2) What are the personal meanings and evaluations that the participants give to the therapy process and its effects on their lives? (3) What are the most significant elements in poetry therapy from the viewpoint of the client? The analysis was based on the Grounded theory method. In this article the author explores the early development of the identity as a writer of a Finnish-speaking poet Lovisa (or Isa) Asp (1853–1872). She wrote her lyrics in the Finnish language in the 1870s, and she is regarded as the first 19th-century female Finnish poet (whose works were published in Finnish). She began writing poetry (initially in Swedish) as a teenager and started her literary career as a contributor to children’s magazines. Asp began her studies at the Teacher Training College in Jyväskylä in autumn 1871 with the aim of working as an elementary school teacher, but she also dreamt of becoming an established writer someday. Tässä artikkelissa analysoin kolmea suomalaista scifiaiheista runoa. Runot ovat Markku Paasosen "Kone", Veera Antsalon "Play" ja Tomi Sonsterin "Tettiläinen". Jokainen tieteisfiktiivinen maailma on rakennettu novumin ympärille. Novum on jokin ilmiö tai keksintö, joka eroaa kirjoittajan omasta todellisuudesta ja joka on selitetty tieteellisesti. Carl Malmgrenin mukaan novumit voidaan nähdä ekstrapolatiivisina novumeina, jotka on tehty venyttämällä jokin asia tekijän omasta todellisuudesta, sekä spekulatiivisina novumeina, jotka tuovat lukijan keskelle täysin uusia todellisuuden lakeja. In this article I develop the concept of kinekphrasis to designate a particular form of intermediality, speci cally, the verbal representation of cinema or other form of moving image. Kinekphrasis builds upon ekphrasis, the classical rhetorical term that today generally refers to texts about static artworks, such as paintings and statues. Representing the medial complex of cinema, however, sets a distinct sensorial and semiotic challenge to a text and brings about a form of intermediality di erent from the traditional ekphrasis.
