The clinical spectrum of disease associated with the recently described defect in jejunal brush border membrane (BBM) Na+/H+ exchange remains poorly defined. We describe a further, lethal case of protracted diarrhoea in a child from a family in whom 2 previous siblings died of protracted diarrhoea at 2 and 11 months. The patient, a boy, was born at term weighing 2.9 kg and was admitted at 6d with profuse watery diarrhoea, severe dehydration and metabolic acidosis. Parenteral nutrition was started but the diarrhoea persisted, and he developed severe necrotising enterocolitis requiring an ileostomy. Dielectric breakdown strength of epoxy bimodal-polymer-brush-grafted core functionalized silica nanocomposites

The central goal of dielectric nanocomposite design is to create a large interfacial area between the matrix polymer and nanofillers and to use it to tailor the properties of the composite. The interface can create sites for trapping electrons leading to increased dielectric breakdown strength (DBS). Nanoparticles with a bimodal population of covalently anchored molecules were created using ligand engineering. Bending or buckling: Compression-induced phase transition in a semi-flexible polymer brush

Molecular-dynamics simulations are presented for systems of densely grafted semiflexible macromolecules grafted to a planar non-adsorbing substrate, studying the case where the persistence length of the polymers is of the same order as their contour length so that the polymer brush may exhibit nematic order. We focus our attention on the case where the first bond must orient perpendicularly to the substrate (so the structure resembles a "Fakir's bed" for short chains and a "polymer bristle" for longer chains). Persistence Length of Cylindrical Brush Molecules Measured by Atomic Force Microscopy

Mechanical properties of single cylindrical polymer brushes with polyisopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) side chains deposited on mica were probed by atomic force microscopy. Visualization and stretching of individual molecules in aqueous solution clearly reveal the semiflexible nature of the cylindrical macromolecules. Imaging of the brushes on mica and inferring lp from a 〈R2〉 vs L plot results in an average persistence length of lp = 29 ± 3 nm, assuming the chains adopt their equilibrium conformation on the surface. An experimental study of double-to-single-loop transition in stirred vessels

The velocity characteristics of the flows in a fully baffled vessel of diameter T = 290 mm stirred by a Rushton impeller of diameter D = T/3 were investigated by means of laser-Doppler anemometry measurements. The effects of clearance and rotational speed on the flow patterns in the vessel were studied. It was found that at impeller clearances from the bottom of the vessel (C) around 0.2 T the characteristic double-loop flow pattern undergoes a transition to a single-loop one with the impeller stream direction becoming partly axial and being inclined at around 25 to 30° to the horizontal. Electromechanical properties of a disc‐type salient‐pole brushless DC motor with different pole numbers

A brushless, permanent magnet, three‐phase disc‐type salient‐pole DC motor with co‐axial flux in the stator is considered. Electromechanical properties of a basic eight‐pole motor are compared with those for a 16‐pole one of the same volume, in order to contrast the two potential candidates for variable‐speed, low‐cost drives. As a basis of the comparative analysis, 3D FEM magnetic field modelling and circuit analysis considering an electronic commutator are employed. An Influence of Permanent Magnet Shape on the Torque Ripple of Disc-Type Brushless DC Motors

An analysis of the torque developed by two types of the disc-type permanent magnet (PM), brushless DC motors: slotted torus motor and motor with stator salient poles is presented. The calculations were performed using three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). Two shapes of PMs are analyzed: trapezoidal and rectangular. The results show that application of rectangular shaped PMs provides significant reduction of the torque ripple in both considered motors.

Due to the complex characteristics of bottle-brush polymers, it became a challenge to develop an efficient algorithm for studying such macromolecules under various solvent conditions or some constraints in the space by using computer simulations.
