Local Viscosity in the Vicinity of a Wall Coated by Polymer Brush from Green-Kubo Relations
2008
When fluids are confined in slit pores between parallel walls, their static structures and their dynamical properties exhibit inhomogeneity in the z-direction perpendicular to the wall. Of particular interest are local bulk viscosity η b (z) and shear viscosity η s (z). Here, we discuss an algorithm to estimate these quantities from Green-Kubo relations using equilibrium molecular dynamics. As an application example, a polymer brush (macromolecules end-grafted to a substrate at z= 0) interacting with a solvent formed from point-like particles is given.
The status of dental caries and related factors in a sample of Iranian adolescents.
2010
Objective: To describe the status of dental caries in a sample of Iranian adolescents aged 14 to 18 years in Qazvin, and to identify caries-related factors affecting this group. Study design: Qazvin was divided into three zones according to socio-economic status. The sampling procedure used was a stratified cluster sampling technique; incorporating 3 stratified zones, for each of which a cluster of school children were recruited from randomly selected high schools. The adolescents agreed to participate in the study and to complete a questionnaire. Dental caries status was assessed in terms of decayed teeth (DT), filled teeth (FT) and decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT). A multivariate …
Metabolomic changes in the rat retina after optic nerve crush.
2013
Purpose To identify metabolic pathways and metabolites affected by optic nerve crush that can act as predictors of the disease or therapeutic targets. Methods The left optic nerve of adult rats was intraorbitally crushed and retinas were dissected 24 hours or 14 days after the lesion (n = 10 per group). Metabolic profiling analysis was carried out by Metabolon, Inc. A total of 195 metabolites were unambiguously detected. Data were normalized and the regulated metabolites were identified after comparing the different conditions. Metabolite concentration changes were analyzed using single and multivariate statistical analysis to detect discriminatory metabolites. Functional clustering and met…
Effect of three prophylaxis methods on surface roughness of giomer
2010
Objectives: Plaque and stains are removed by prophylaxis methods from tooth surfaces. Since prophylaxis methods can have a detrimental effect on the surface finish of restorations, the aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of three prophylaxis methods, including pumice with rubber cup, pumice with brush, and air-powder polishing device (APD) on the surface roughness of giomer. Study design: Sixty four cylindrical giomer (Beautifil II, Shofu) samples with a diameter of 6 mm and a height of 2 mm were used. Subsequent to a 3-month period of storage in distilled water at 37ºC, the samples were randomly divided into four groups of 16. In group 1 (control), no prophylaxis proce…

AF/R2 adhesin and cytopathic effect as virulence traits of diarrhea-inducing Escherichia coli O103 in European rabbit
1995
Escherichia coli strains belonging to 0103:K-:H2 serovar and rhamnose negative biovars are responsible for frequent life-threatening diarrheas in weaned rabbits from national breeding units in western Europe (Blanco et al., 1994; Camguilhem and A. Milon, 1989). According to their mechanisms of pathogenesis, these strains may be considered as enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC)-like. They adhere to intestinal brush border and to HeLa cells by mean of an adhesin called AF/R2 (Adhesive Factor/Rabbit 2) (Milon et al., 1990). They do not produce known toxins (i.e. ST, LT, SLT, CNF, CLDT) (Blanco et al., 1994; Mariani-Kurkdjian et al., 1993) and bear sequences homologous to EPEC eaeA (Leroy et al., 1…
EVOLUZIONE DELLA COMPOSIZIONE GRANULOMETRICA DI SABBIE POMICEE SOTTOPOSTE A COMPRESSIONE 1-D FINO AD ALTE PRESSIONI
2012
The evolution of grain-size distribution of sands under 1-D compression
2009
Crushing of particles is a fundamental mechanisms leading to deformation of particulate materials at medium and high stresses. As crushing progresses, the grain-size distribution undergoes modifications, causing changes of the porosity, grain-to-grain contacts and of their density (”packing density” and “grain contact”). The main aim of the research is the identification of trends in the modifications of characteristic diameters (D10, D15, D25, etc.) in function of the applied stress s´v. Results of a laboratory research programme on the crushing of dry sands compressed under one-dimensional conditions, at vertical effective stresses ′v up to 120 MPa, are reported in the paper. Tests have …
Brushite/Hydroxyapatite Coatings obtained by galvanic deposition on 316L Stainless Steel
2016
Hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is a basic calcium phosphate mineral with chemical composition similar to that of bones and teeth. Owing to this peculiarity HA is a biocompatible material of high medical interest. Unfortunately, it possesses poor mechanical properties, because is brittle, has a low fracture resistance and a poor wear resistance. For these reasons, in the last years the research was been focused on the use of HA as a coating of another biomaterial that acts as support. The best choice is that to use a substrate that must be bionert and mechanically stable, such as 316L stainless steel (316LSS). This is useful for biomedical implants, because of its excellent biocompatib…
