Typhetum laxmannii (Ubrizsy 1961) Nedelcu 1968 - The new plant association in Poland
2011
Typhetum laxmannii (Ubrizsy 1961) Nedelcu 1968 is a plant association new to Poland, built by an expansive kenophyte - Typha laxmannii Lepech. This paper presents the general distribution of both, the species and the association, paying particular attention to the area of Europe and Poland where, in recent years, many new locations as well as an increasing participation in vegetation cover have been observed. The habitat preferences of Typhetum laxmannii, the floristic composition of the association and its geographical differentiation within the occupied area are described. The current distribution of the association in Poland …
Reduced levels of membrane-bound alkaline phosphatase in Vip3Aa-resistant Heliothis virescens
2020
ABSTRACTThe Vip3Aa insecticidal protein fromBacillus thuringiensis(Bt) is produced by specific transgenic corn and cotton varieties for efficient control of target lepidopteran pests. The main threat to this technology is the evolution of resistance in targeted insect pests, thus understanding the mechanistic basis of resistance is crucial to deploy the most appropriate strategies for resistance management. In this work, a laboratory-selected colony ofHeliothis virescens(Vip-Sel) highly resistant to the Vip3Aa protein was used to test whether an alteration of membrane receptors in the insect midgut might explain the resistance phenotype. Binding of125I-labeled Vip3Aa to brush border membran…
The Sulawesi Thrush ( Cataponera turdoides ; Aves: Passeriformes) belongs to the genus Turdus
2021
The Asian and Australo-Papuan faunas meet and intermix across the islands of Wallacea. Untangling the origins and relationships of the species inhabiting these archipelagos is an ongoing project that has lasted for well over a century. In recent years, molecular phylogenetic studies have made considerable progress in clarifying the affinities of enigmatic Wallacean taxa, but taxonomic riddles remain, even in groups as well studied as birds. Such is the case with Sulawesi Thrush Cataponera turdoides, a scarce and elusive montane songbird whose taxonomic placement has remained controversial since its description. To determine the evolutionary relationships of this monotypic genus, we obtained…
Oral health care activities performed by caregivers for institutionalized elderly in Barcelona-Spain
2013
Objectives: To describe the frequency of brushing teeth and cleaning of dentures, performed by caregivers, for institutionalized elderly people. Methods: A cross-sectional study in a sample of 196 caregivers of 31 health centers in Barcelona. The dependent variables were frequency of dental brushing and frequency of cleaning of dentures of the elderly by caregivers. The independent variables were characteristics of caregivers and institutions. We performed bivariate and multivariate descriptive analyses. Robust Poisson regression models were fitted to determine factors associated with the dependent variables and to assess the strength of the association. Results: 83% of caregivers were wome…
Dental services utilization between 1977 and 1995 by Finnish adolescents of different socioeconomic levels.
1998
Equal distribution of health care services has long been a major goal of health policy in the Nordic countries. According to these guidelines, every child is expected to have an examination and treatment at least every second year. The aim of this study was to analyze the trends and, in particular, the socioeconomic differences in dental visits between 1977 and 1995. The data were collected as part of a nationwide research program, the Adolescent Health and Lifestyle Survey, which began in 1977. Every second year a self-administered questionnaire was mailed to a representative sample of 14-, 16- and 18-year-old Finns. The sample sizes in the surveys varied from 2422 to 9556, making a total …
Influence of immigration and other factors on caries in 12- and 15-yr-old children.
2007
In recent years the Valencia region has undergone mass immigration, mainly of people from eastern Europe, North Africa, and Latin America. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of immigration on caries prevalence and experience in 12- and 15-yr-old children in the Valencia region, and to relate this to other socio-economic and oral hygiene-related variables. The data were obtained from the epidemiological study of oral health carried out in the Valencia Region in 2004. The study group comprised 478, 12-yr-old children and 401, 15-yr-old children. Immigration status, age, toothbrushing frequency, and intake of cariogenic foods between meals showed significant association in a …
Dual effect of 1-deoxymannojirimycin on the mannose uptake and on the N-glycan processing of the human colon cancer cell line HT-29.
1990
International audience; 1-Deoxymannojirimycin (dMM), a specific alpha-mannosidase I inhibitor, completely blocks the conversion of Man9-8GlcNAc2 into Man7-5-GlcNAc2 in both differentiated and undifferentiated human adenocarcinoma HT-29 cells. Besides this well known effect on N-glycan trimming, we describe here a novel effect of this inhibitor on the D-[2-3H]mannose uptake that is exclusively observed in differentiated intestinal cells, i.e. cells that display a functional apical brush border membrane. This inhibition of D-[2-3H]mannose uptake was shown to be dose-dependent and reversible. Moreover, using microsomal fractions we showed that this effect depends only on the integrity of the b…
Assessment of the pedicel detaching and crashing forces of grape berries to determine the right mechanical harvesting period
2007
During the mechanical harvesting the shakers cause the detachment of the grape berries from the grape stalk but also the breaking of the grape berries peel with the consequent production of must that influences the quality of the harvested grapes. This one is higher in the varieties having grape berries more resistant to the crushing and, at the same time, an easier detachment of the pedicel. The aim of this work is to evaluate, for three different varieties of grape (Chardonnay, Catarratto comune and Nero d’Avola), the crushing strength of the berry, that represents the cause of the production of must during the mechanical harvesting, and the resistance of the berry-pedicel system that inf…
Reduced membrane-bound alkaline phosphatase does not affect binding of Vip3Aa in a Heliothis virescens resistant colony

The pronephros of the early ammocoete larva of lampreys (Cyclostomata, Petromyzontes): Fine structure of the renal tubules
1991
The renal tubules of the paired pronephros in early larvae (ammocoetes) of two lamprey species, Lampetra fluviatilis and Petromyzon marinus, were studied by use of light-, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy. They consist of (1) a variable number of pronephric tubules (3 to 6), and (2) an excretory duct. By fine-structural criteria, the renal tubules can be divided into 6 segments. Each pronephric tubule is divided into (1) the nephrostome and (2) the proximal tubule, the excretory duct consisting of (3) a common proximal tubule followed by (4) a short intermediate segment, and then by a pronephric duct composed of (5) a cranial and (6) a caudal section. The epithelium of the nep…
