The implementation of mindfulness in healthcare Systems: a theoretical analysis
2014
Abstract Objective Evidence regarding the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) is increasing exponentially; however, there are still challenges to their integration in healthcare systems. Our goal is to provide a conceptual framework that addresses these challenges in order to bring about scholarly dialog and support health managers and practitioners with the implementation of MBIs in healthcare. Method This is an opinative narrative review based on theoretical and empirical data that address key issues in the implementation of mindfulness in healthcare systems, such as the training of professionals, funding and costs of interventions, cost effectiveness and innovative deliver…

During 2020, the Mediterranean Sea was again the testing ground for migration flows from North Africa and the Middle East to Italy, Greece and Spain. 2020 was also a complex year due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Movements between countries were affected by the spread of the virus that spared no one and imposed the need to reflect on 'global health' and the consequences that this has, also in the relationship between countries and in travel.
Application of Mathematical Modelling and Symmetry in Neuroscience
2022
The first article is "Spectral Clustering Reveals Different Profiles of Central Sensitization in Women with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)" [1]. CTS is considered to be one of the most prevalent entrapment neuropathies of the upper extremities. The most common symptoms experienced by CTS patients are sensory disturbances, such as pain, numbness, tingling, and/or paresthesia in areas innervated by the median nerve. This physical condition relates to unemployment and creates substantial health care costs, as well as an economic burden to the concern families. It is estimated that CTS has a lifetime prevalence of 3.1% and an incidence rate of 1.73 per 1000 person-year in the general population; …
Self-Care and Sense of Coherence: A Salutogenic Model for Health and Care in Nursing Education
2022
Background: Effective advocacy on self-care and the enhancement of a sense of coherence among nurses don’t only benefit control over one’s health and personal performance, but it may have a direct impact on clinical care and on the entire healing system. In this regard, nursing curricula grounded on a salutogenic model of health (SMH) operate with strategies to engage students in self-care and contribute to improving their mental health and wellbeing. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between self-care agency and a sense of coherence as dependent variables and the age and self-reported academic performance as independent variables in nursing assistant studen…

Presence of palm oil in foodstuffs: consumers' perception
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the presence of palm oil in food products on sale, and to study and compare consumers’ opinions about this oil type in Spain (importing country) and Peru (producing country). Design/methodology/approach Recent news published in both countries, which could influence consumer perceptions, were analysed. A study on the labelling of foodstuffs in Spain was carried out, as was a survey with Spanish and Peruvian consumers. Findings Palm oil was found in a large number of products and in a wide range of foods, especially those from the bakery sector. The percentages of saturated fats varied substantially within the same product type. Spanish consu…
Genomic profile of breast cancer: costeffectiveness analysis from the Spanish National Healthcare System perspective.
2014
Background: Costeffectiveness analysis of MammaPrint® (70-gene signature) in the diagnosis of early breast cancer as a prognosis assay to study the risk of tumor recurrence to administer adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: Markov model assuming a cohort of 60-year-old women with breast cancer. Treatment costs and effects were assessed by comparing the 5-year, 10-year and lifetime risk of recurrence using Adjuvant! Online® (online algorithm), 70-gene signature or Oncotype DX® (21-gene assay). Results: 70-gene signature showed a life expectancy of 23.55 years at lifetime. Life expectancy was lower for 21-gene assay and online algorithm, with associated quality-adjusted life year gains up to 0.23 …
La salute organizzativa nei contesti sanitari: Un’esperienza di ricerca-intervento.
2011
ABSTRACT - From a psychosocial perspective that is intended to produce both understanding and change, especially involv-ing social actors in the construction of shared meanings, this paper illustrates the results of the first stage of an action research process focused on organizational health. The study has been carried out within an Italian hospital combining both quantitative and qualitative methods. Specifically, the data were gathered through the administration of Multidimensional Organizational Health Questionnaire (n=782) and focus group interviews whose transcripts were analyzed with the software T-Lab. The analysis of collected data has allowed us to trace the organizational health…
