Sublexical effects on eye movements during repeated reading of words and pseudowords in Finnish

2011

The role of different orthographic units (letters, syllables, words) in reading of orthographically transparent Finnish language was studied by independently manipulating the number of letters (NoL) and syllables (NoS) in words and pseudowords and by recording eye movements during repeated reading aloud of these items. Fluent adult readers showed evidence for using larger orthographic units in (pseudo)word recoding, whereas dysfluent children seem to be stuck in a letter-based decoding strategy, as lexicality and item repetition decreased the NoL effect only among adult readers. The NoS manipulation produced weak repetition effects in both groups. However, dysfluent children showed evidence…

A dynamic adjustment model of saccade lengths in reading for word-spaced orthographies : evidence from simulations and invisible boundary experiments

2021

Contemporary models of eye movement control in reading assume a discrete target word selection process preceding saccade length computation, while the selection itself is assumed to be driven by word identification processes. However, a potentially more parsimonious, dynamic adjustment view allows both next word length and its content (e.g. orthographic) to modulate saccade length in a continuous manner. Based on a recently proposed center-based saccade length account (a new regression model of forward saccade length is introduced and validated in a simulation study. Further, additional simulations and gaze-contingent invisible boundary experiments were used to study the cognitive mechanism…

Speech recall and word recognition depending on prosodic and musical cues as well as voice pitch

2011

Within this study, speech perception in different conditions was examined. The aim of the research was to compare perception results based on stimuli mode (plain spoken, rhythmic spoken or rhythmic sung stimuli) and pitch (normal, lower and higher). In the study, an experiment was conducted on 44 participants who had been asked to listen to 9 recorded sentences in Russian language (unknown to them) and write them down using Latin letters. These 9 sentences were specially prepared using different phonetic environments, voice pitches, rhythmic structures and presentation modes (sung/spoken). The analysis showed that recall ability (for both the amount of remembered and recall accuracy) had be…

Analysis of event related potentials in a word recognition experiment with fluent and dysfluent readers

2014

Learning English! : a material package for dyslexic 7th graders in English as a foreign language classrooms

2012

Yksi suurimmista haasteista nykypäivän peruskoulussa ovat oppilaiden erilaiset oppimisvaikeudet. Tutkimusten mukaan jopa 80 % oppimisvaikeustapauksista taustalla on dysleksia, jossa oppilaalla on vaikeuksia niin teknisessä lukemisessa kuin oman kirjoittamisensa hallinnassa. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on vastata niihin haasteisiin, joita dysleksiasta kärsivien oppilaiden opettamisessa esiintyy. Vaikka nykypäivän oppikirjoista löytyy jo jonkin verran eriyttävää materiaalia eri taitotasoilla oleville oppilaille, joutuvat opettajat usein muokkaamaan materiaaleja oppilaiden tarpeita vastaaviksi ja valmistamaan itse lisämateriaalia. Usein opettajien voimavarat ja mahdollisuudet eivät tähän ri…
