Tasks that suit the learning of L2 English vocabulary in the Finnish middle school : teachers' and students' perspectives

Tiivistelmä – Abstract Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää yläkoulun oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteitä sanaston oppimiseen suunnatuista tehtävistä; millaiset tehtävät heidän mielestään sopivat sanaston oppimiseen yläkoulussa. Samalla selvitettiin sanaston oppimista koulun ulkopuolella sekä sanaston oppimiseen käytettyä aikaa. Oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteitä verrattiin toisiinsa. Tutkimus toteutettiin Tampereella vuonna 2010. Osallistujina olivat kolme englannin opettajaa ja heidän luokkansa, yksi kutakin luokka-astetta, yhteensä 52 oppilasta. Filling the ___-s in Finnish MWE lexicons

This paper describes the automatic construction of FinnMWE: a lexicon of Finnish Multi-Word Expressions (MWEs). In focus here are syntactic frames: verbal constructions with arguments in a particular morphological form. The verbal frames are automatically extracted from FinnWordNet and English Wiktionary. The resulting lexicon interoperates with dependency tree searching software so that instances can be quickly found within dependency treebanks. The extraction and enrichment process is explained in detail. The resulting resource is evaluated in terms of its coverage of different types of MWEs. The article focuses on the development of ecclesiastical and iconographical vocabulary in the Finnish autonomous Orthodox Church from the 1930s to the 1980s. In 1931, Archbishop Herman launched a project which aimed to find Finnish words for Orthodox objects and concepts. In his opinion the mixed use of Greek and Russian loanwords was too confusing. A questionnaire containing 333 Russian words was sent to clergy and some Orthodox teachers, who were asked to suggest Finnish synonyms for them. The answers reveal on the one hand a variety of new, invented words and on the other hand a reluctant attitude towards the Archbishop’s attentions. Oppikirjan liitteenä esiintyessään sanasto on totuttu näkemään selkeärajaisena luettelona opeteltavista sanoista, joille kullekin on annettu kutakuinkin yksiselitteiset selitykset tai käännösvastineet. Sanojen oppimisen periaatekin on ollut selvä: jos osaat toistaa luettelon sanakokeessa, olet oppinut sanat.
