Towards water operations of the future.
2018
Nowadays multiple use of “smart” word is provided in many fields including research. Sometimes it is a synonym for chic, elegant or straight. A smart water system is not the same as an elegant, glamorous or fashionable system. Instead it operates to fulfil the requirements of producing an acceptable product while keeping the energy and resource requirements at a minimum. However, while cost savings has up until recently been our primary aim of making water and wastewater operations more efficient, there is now a more pressing agenda of sustainability driving the smart agenda. The primary aim of developing our utilities into a higher level of smart is hence moving from a singular focus on co…
Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Advanced Membrane Separation Processes for Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management - Ca…
2020
Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Advanced Membrane Separation Processes for Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management - Case Studies and Sustainability Analysis gives an up-to-date review and research developments of MBR systems (including hybrid systems) in wastewater treatment in terms of pollutant removal, nutrient recovery, and energy production as well as the achievement of energy efficiency of the process itself. The current challenges that hinder the application and industrialization of MBR technology as well as knowledge gaps and future research perspectives are also discussed, including possible strategies to solve the various problems involved. This work…
Nutrient sources in a Mediterranean catchment and their improvement for water quality management
2010
Changes in land-use or management strategies may affect water outflow, sediment and nutrients loads. Thus, there is an increasing demand for quantitative information at the catchment scale that would help decision makers or planners to take appropriate decisions. The characterisation of water status, the description of pollution sources impact, the establishment of monitoring programs and the implementation of river basin management plans require an analysis of the current basin status and estimates of the relative significance of the different sources of pollution. Particularly, in this study the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT2000) model was considered since it is an integrated hydro…
Polyhydroxyalkanoates from mixed microbial culture: Production and extraction through green methods
2018
Large scale polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production is limited by high production costs compared to that of petroleum-based plastics. Two key factors can be pin down to reduce costs: i) the use of mixed microbial cultures (MMC) instead of pure cultures and ii) the application of cheap and environmental friendly recovery technologies. In this work, the MMC biomass with PHA-accumulating capacity was selected in a sequencing batch reactor fed with a synthetic effluent emulating a fermented oil mill wastewater. The biomass was harvested and transferred to an accumulation reactor, where PHA contents up to 54% of the dry cell weight were obtained, using a mixture of acetic and propionic acids. A c…

Integrated urban drainage uncertainty assessment : the influence of the likelihood efficiency measures
PROCEEDINGS 11th International Conference on Urban Drainage Modelling (UDM) Sep. 23–26, 2018 Palermo, Italy
2018
In recent decades, urban drainage systems are receiving increased attention as interests in sustainable water resources grow. Modelling of urban drainage system is of paramount importance for enhancing human life. Specifically, modelling of urban drainage system focuses on the main and advanced topics (e.g., water quality and quantity, urban flooding and modelling, urban flood forecasting and risk analysis, socio-economic interactions and modelling tools, etc… ) by paying the attention on the interrelationships among the entire water cycle, environment and society.

Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Advanced Membrane Separation Processes for Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management -Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Processes and Technologies gives an up-to-date review on research developments of AnMBR systems (including hybrid systems) in wastewater treatment in terms of pollutants removal, nutrients recovery and energy production, as well as the achievement of energy efficiency of the process itself. The current challenges that hinder the application and industrialization of AnMBR technology, knowledge gaps and future research perspectives are also explained and discussed with potential strategies for solving problems. The book…
2020
The recent legislative measures and practices introduced in Italy in the filed of migration have highlighted many of the juridical problems that the current sanitary crisis is posing, especially with regard to the relationship between state of emergency and constitutional rights, also with regard to the State's obligations under international law. After briefly highliting the danger in opposing individual rights and undetermined political purposes, this contribution underlines the lack of reasonableness and consistency of these interventions. Particular attention is paid to the Decree 7 April, 2020, n. 150, which states that Italian ports, in time of pandemic, cannot be considered safe port…
