Health Care Waste production: measures and estimates in “V. Cervello” Hospital, Palermo, Italy.
2009
A monitoring work was carried out in May/June 2007 in one large hospital located in Palermo. The monitoring consisted in weighing the infectious waste containers filled in some Departments purposely chosen. As a second stage of the work a comparison was attempted between the results obtained from the waste production monitoring and the Hospital’s purchases recorded in the same time. A restricted list of purchased products out of the general one was extracted. Such list allows one to calculate approximately the mass of medical devices purchased and their composition. To these materials a reasonable change in humidity after use was attributed. It was possible in this deductive way to draw a p…
Measuring performance on the Healthcare Access and Quality Index for 195 countries and territories and selected subnational locations: a systematic a…
2018
BACKGROUND: A key component of achieving universal health coverage is ensuring that all populations have access to quality health care. Examining where gains have occurred or progress has faltered across and within countries is crucial to guiding decisions and strategies for future improvement. We used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) to assess personal health-care access and quality with the Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index for 195 countries and territories, as well as subnational locations in seven countries, from 1990 to 2016. METHODS: Drawing from established methods and updated estimates from GBD 2016, we used 32 causes from which…
Towards a new welfare state: the social sustainability principle and health care strategies
2003
In this paper we propose a social and health care model that offers alternatives to three problems arising in converging European welfare states, particularly in the southern nations: the rise in demand for services and features linked to the ageing process, the increase in dependency and the crisis of informal support. Development of the principles of social sustainability implies re-formulation of the regulatory, care, economic, administrative, cultural, and axiological framework enabling a response to the needs of long term care without compromising the welfare of future generations. Together with this principle, quality of life elevated to a subjective right directs attention towards th…
Necesidad de una coordinación socio-sanitaria ante situaciones de emergencia social en las localidades de Xàtiva y Ontinyent (España)
2019
This article try to show up whether there is a need to coordinate the local Social Services (“SS.SS” in Spanish) with the Emergency Health Care Service (“SAMU” in Spanish) from both Xàtiva and Ontinyent (towns of the Community of Valencia) in order to allow an integrated care, carried out using an ad-hoc survey completed by (“SAMU” in Spanish) health workers and social workers from both Xàtiva and Ontinyent making up a descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study. Some of the results show that all the professionals point out the absolute need to coordinate the SAMU with the (“SS.SS” in Spanish) and that almost all of the sample believe that it is essential or necessary to implement …
A new approach in the monitoring of the phytosanitary conditions of forests: the case of oak and beech stands in the Sicilian Regional Parks.
2016
The objective of this study was to investigate the health conditions of oak and beech stands in the three Regional Parks of Sicily (Etna, Madonie and Nebrodi). A total of 81 sampling areas were investigated, 54 in oak stands and 27 in beech stands. The phytosanitary conditions of each tree within the respective sampling area was expressed with a synthetic index namely phytosanitary class (PC). Oak stands showed severe symptoms of decline, with 85% of the sampling areas including symptomatic trees. In general, beech stands were in better condition, with the exception of Nebrodi Park, where trees showed severe symptoms of decline. On oak trees, infections of fungal pathogens were also observe…
Ecological risk assessment of agricultural soils for the definition of soil screening values: A comparison between substance-based and matrix-based a…
2017
The Italian legislation on contaminated soils does not include the Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) and this deficiency has important consequences for the sustainable management of agricultural soils. The present research compares the results of two ERA procedures applied to agriculture (i) one based on the “substance-based” approach and (ii) a second based on the “matrix-based” approach. In the former the soil screening values (SVs) for individual substances were derived according to institutional foreign guidelines. In the latter, the SVs characterizing the whole-matrix were derived originally by the authors by means of experimental activity.\ud \ud \ud The results indicate that the “matr…
L'INTERVENTO DEL FARMACISTA NELL’EDUCAZIONE SANITARIA
2013
The fouling phenomenon in membrane bioreactors: model description and strategies for energy saving
2015
Membrane fouling represents one of the major crucial issues for membrane bioreactor (MBR). Membrane fouling and high aeration requirements (for inducing shear stress to limit fouling) make MBR operation economically demanding due to high energy costs. Although several studies on MBR fouling have been performed, a comprehensive knowledge on how to reduce membrane fouling and consequently energy saving is still lacking. Two scenarios are analyzed and compared each implementing different operating conditions. As expected, MBR operation at low air flow rate (qa) leads to a substantial reduction of the operational costs (namely, 20% respect to the suggested manufacturers ones in terms of qa).
