An ab initio study of the relation between NMR chemical shifts and solid-state structures: hexabenzocoronene derivatives
2000
The assignment of solid-state NMR spectra is studied by the use of model systems computed with ab initio methods. The investigated system is a hexabenzocoronene derivative, for which a T-like arrangement of dimer units is found in the solid-state structure. Here, a tetramer model is required to explain the intermolecular interactions influencing the spectrum, whereas a dimer model is found to be inadequate. For the tetramer model, agreement of the computed NMR spectrum with the experimental solid-state magic angle spinning MAS-NMR data is observed. This study implies that the combination of experimental NMR data with quantum chemical calculations can be employed as a useful tool in determin…
13C-Decoupled J-Coupling Spectroscopy Using Two-Dimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at Zero-Field
2017
We present a two-dimensional method for obtaining 13C-decoupled, 1H-coupled nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra in zero magnetic field using coherent spin-decoupling. The result is a spectrum determined only by the proton–proton J-coupling network. Detection of NMR signals in zero magnetic field requires at least two different nuclear spin species, but the proton J-spectrum is independent of isotopomer, thus potentially simplifying spectra and thereby improving the analytical capabilities of zero-field NMR. The protocol does not rely on a difference in Larmor frequency between the coupled nuclei, allowing for the direct determination of J-coupling constants between chemically equivalen…
Predominance of inductive over resonance substituent effect on33S NMR chemical shifts of 4-substituted phenyl-4′-methylphenacyl sulfones
1999
33S NMR chemical shifts have been determined for the first time for a series of 10 substituted phenacyl sulfones. Electron-withdrawing and electron-releasing substituents in 4-substituted phenyl-4′-methylphenacyl sulfones, p-MeC6H4COCH2SO2C6H4R-p, cause a ‘reverse’ substituent effect on the 33S NMR resonance. Dual-substituent parameter (DSP) analysis of δ(33S) values revealed that the inductive effect of the substituent predominates over its resonance effect. This finding shows that the 33S NMR chemical shifts are of importance in estimating the electronic properties of sulfur-containing compounds. The 13C and 17O NMR chemical shifts of the title compounds are also discussed. Copyright © 19…

Comparative analysis of short tandem repeats and single nucleotide polymorphisms on the Y-chromosome in Germans, Chinese and Thais.
2003
We have typed genomic DNA samples from 95 individuals from Western Germany, 78 individuals from Bangkok/Thailand and 56 individuals from Chengdu/China for 11 Y-chromosomal diallelic polymorphisms and eight short tandem repeat (STR) systems. For single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis, a rapid method was applied using the single base extension technology (minisequencing) in combination with capillary electrophoresis. PCR products for SRY-8299, Tat, SRY2627, 92R7, SRY1532, M9, M13, M17/M19 and M20 were pooled and used as templates for the commercially available SNaPshot kit. In addition to these ten SNPs we also tested the Y-chromosomal diallelic Alu repeat insertion DYS287 (YAP) by aga…
Development and localization of microsatellite markers for the sibling species Chironomus riparius and Chironomus piger (Diptera: Chironomidae)
2006
Five variable microsatellite loci are reported for the nonbiting midge species Chironomus riparius and Chironomus piger. All loci show considerable intraspecific variation and species-specific alleles, which allow to discriminate among the two closely related species and their interspecific hybrids, and to estimate genetic diversity within and between populations. Additionally, the loci were localized on C. riparius polytene chromosomes to verify their single copy status and investigate possible chromosomal linkage. The described markers are used in different studies with regard to population and ecological genetics and evolutionary ecotoxicology of Chironomus.
A multi-temporal study of chlorophyll-a concentration in the Albufera lagoon of Valencia, Spain, using Thematic Mapper data
1990
Abstract A multi-temporal study of chlorophyll-a concentration, has been made by means of Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) band 1 (0·45-0·52μm) in the Albufera of Valencia, a hypertrophic lagoon of shallow depth. The relationship between this parameter and satellite data was set up from in situ measurements and concurrent satellite data obtained in a campaign from 22 July 1985. This relation has been applied to images of different dates by using a simple procedure of correction, which is based on the use of selected surfaces whose ground reflectance is assumed to be constant with time. Good results were obtained and chlorophyll-a concentrations have been determined with an error of 20 per cen…
Towards the quantitative and physically-based interpretation of solar-induced vegetation fluorescence retrieved from global imaging
2021
Due to emerging high spectral resolution, remote sensing techniques and ongoing developments to retrieve the spectrally resolved vegetation fluorescence spectrum from several scales, the light reactions of photosynthesis are receiving a boost of attention for the monitoring of the Earth's carbon balance. Sensor-retrieved vegetation fluorescence (from leaf, tower, airborne or satellite scale) originating from the excited antenna chlorophyll a molecule has become a new quantitative biophysical vegetation parameter retrievable from space using global imaging techniques. However, to retrieve the actual quantum efficiencies, and hence a true photosynthetic status of the observed vegetation, all …
Multitemporal Monitoring of Plant Area Index in the Valencia Rice District with PocketLAI
2016
Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical parameter used to determine foliage cover and crop growth in environmental studies in order to assess crop yield. Frequently, plant canopy analyzers (LAI-2000) and digital cameras for hemispherical photography (DHP) are used for indirect effective plant area index (PAI(eff)) estimates. Nevertheless, these instruments are expensive and have the disadvantages of low portability and maintenance. Recently, a smartphone app called PocketLAI was presented and tested for acquiring PAI(eff) measurements. It was used during an entire rice season for indirect PAI(eff) estimations and for deriving reference high-resolution PAI(eff) maps. Ground PAI(eff) value…
