Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja virtuālā izstāde „Pirmie pavadoņu novērojumi Latvijas Universitātē pirms 60 gadiem” stāsta par 1957. – 1958. gadu, kad tika palaisti pirmie Zemes mākslīgie pavadoņi. Universitātes astronomi aktīvi iesaistījās to novērošanā, jo bija nepieciešams noteikt pavadoņu orbītas. Sākumā notika pavadoņu vizuālie novērojumi, kuros bija iesaistīti daudzi studenti. Tā kā tie nebija pietiekami precīzi, astronomi sāka domāt par pavadoņu fotografēšanu. Pirmos uzņēmumus ieguva 1958. gadā uz LU galvenās ēkas jumta Raiņa bulvārī 19. Hierarchical structure of the Sicilian goats revealed by Bayesian analyses of microsatellite information

Genetic structure and relationship amongst the main goat populations in Sicily (Girgentana, Derivata di Siria, Maltese and Messinese) were analysed using information from 19 microsatellite markers genotyped on 173 individuals. A posterior Bayesian approach implemented in the program STRUCTURE revealed a hierarchical structure with two clusters at the first level (Girgentana vs. Messinese, Derivata di Siria and Maltese), explaining 4.8% of variation (amovaФ(ST) estimate). The pond slider Trachemys scripta is one of the most widespread alien turtle species in the world. Its unregulated trade and the consequent uncontrolled releases into the wild led to negative impacts on the native turtles of the invaded areas. In Italy, alien pond sliders are widely spread, and the occurrence of hatchlings and well-established populations is known in some areas. However, to date in Sicily, only a single female of Trachemys scripta laying eggs was reported. During migration, birds can show different responses to wind in relation to distance to the goal, experience, ecological barriers and visibility of landmarks. We analysed the effect of wind (tailwinds and crosswinds) on daily movement rates (forward and perpendicular) of Eleonora’s falcons using ARGOS satellite telemetry, during their trans-continental autumn migration to Madagascar, in relation to the different crossed regions and individuals’ age class.
