Mechanisms of Water Interaction with Pore Systems of Hydrochar and Pyrochar from Poplar Forestry Waste

The aim of this study was to understand the water-surface interactions of two chars obtained by gasification (pyrochar) and hydrothermal carbonization (hydrochar) of a poplar biomass. The two samples revealed different chemical compositions as evidenced by solid state (13)C NMR spectroscopy. In fact, hydrochar resulted in a lignin-like material still containing oxygenated functionalities. Pyrochar was a polyaromatic system in which no heteronuclei were detected. Acetazolamide treatment for infantile central sleep apnea.

Central sleep apnea is a common respiratory pattern in healthy neonates. Nevertheless, frequent central sleep apnea associated with drops in oxygen saturation may contribute to infantile morbidity. Recently, low-dose acetazolamide was shown to reduce symptomatic central sleep apnea in adults. We treated 12 infants, median conceptional age 42 weeks (range, 40-44 weeks), with central sleep apnea. In all cases, the central apnea index was >40/h total sleeping time (apnea ≥ 3 sec). The cumulative duration of drops in oxygen saturation below 90% was more than 3 min/h total sleeping time. The movement of alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3, n-3) through the mitochondrial outer membrane to oxidation sites was studied in rat liver and compared with the movement of linoleic acid (C18:2, n-6) and oleic acid (C18:1, n-9). All differ in the degree of unsaturation, but have the same chain length and the same position of the first double bond when counted from the carboxyl end. The following results were obtained. Oxygenation of malignant tumors after localized microwave hyperthermia

The oxyhemoglobin saturation (HbO2) of single red blood cells within tumor microvessels (diameter: 3-12 micrometers) of DS-Carcinosarcoma was studied using a cryophotometric micromethod. In untreated control tumors (mean tissue temperature approx. 35 degrees C) the measured values scattered over the whole saturation range from zero to 100 sat. %, the mean being 51 sat. %. Upon heating at 40 degrees C for 30 min, the oxygenation of the tumor tissue significantly improved as compared with control conditions. Preterm Resuscitation With Low Oxygen Causes Less Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Chronic Lung Disease

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to reduce adverse pulmonary adverse outcomes, oxidative stress, and inflammation in neonates of 24 to 28 weeks of gestation initially resuscitated with fractions of inspired oxygen of 30% or 90%. METHODS: Randomized assignment to receive 30% (N = 37) or 90% (N = 41) oxygen was performed. Targeted oxygen saturation values were 75% at 5 minutes and 85% at 10 minutes. Reductive Drug Metabolism in Isolated Perfused Rat Liver under Restricted Oxygen Supply

1. Hepatic azo and nitro reductase activities were studied in the perfused rat liver under normal and restricted oxygen supply. 2. Formation of sulphanilamide or p-aminobenzoic acid from neoprontosil or p-nitrobenzoic acid under aerobic conditions of liver perfusion was negligible, even at a reduced oxygen saturation of a pO2 of 300 mm Hg in the haemoglobinfree perfusion system.
