Closed-Loop Automatic Oxygen Control (CLAC) in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial
2014
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In preterm infants receiving supplemental oxygen, routine manual control (RMC) of the fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) is often difficult and time consuming. We developed a system for closed-loop automatic control (CLAC) of the FIO2 and demonstrated its short-term safety and efficacy in a single-center study. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that this system is more effective than RMC alone in maintaining arterial oxygen saturation within target levels when evaluated over 24 hours under routine conditions and with different target levels. METHODS: We performed a multicenter, randomized controlled, crossover clinical trial in 34 preterm infa…
Obstructive sleep apnoea independently predicts lipid levels: Data from the European Sleep Apnea Database
2018
Background and objective: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and dyslipidaemia are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This study investigates the association between OSA and plasma lipid concentrations in patients enrolled in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) cohort. Methods: The cross-sectional analysis included 8592 patients without physician-diagnosed hyperlipidaemia or reported intake of a lipid-lowering drug (age 50.1 ± 12.7 years, 69.1% male, BMI: 30.8 ± 6.6 kg/m2, mean apnoea–hypopnoea index (AHI): 25.7 ± 25.9 events/h). The independent relationship between measures of OSA (AHI, oxygen desaturation index (ODI), mean and lowest oxygen saturation) and lipid profil…

Fracture toughness of synthesised high-performance epoxies subject to accelerated water aging
2018
Abstract The effects of water uptake on the fracture toughness of epoxy systems with high glass-transition temperatures (Tg above 170 °C) are investigated. Aging conditioning has been conducted in hot water, followed by a desorption conditioning in a room temperature dry-airborne. Water aging determines plasticisation effects and crosslink-density modifications, revealed by reductions of the Tg. It is less known how such modifications influence the material fracture toughness. In this study, Single Edge Notched Bending samples have been tested according to standards, to evaluate the KIC fracture toughness at different stages of water absorption-desorption. The characterisation has been supp…
On thermal influence of laser beam irradiation on optical absorption of amorphous as-evaporated As2S3 films
1998
Abstract Photoinduced changes of the optical absorption in amorphous as-evaporated As 2 S 3 thin films are studied. Before the measurements films were kept at dark for more than two years. The long storage time ensured that the relaxational structural changes caused by the deposition process were absent. As a light source a CW unfocused 488.0 nm Ar laser line was used. The intensity of the laser beam was varied from rather low intensity values up to intensities which raised the temperature of the films above the glass transition temperature. Based on the behavior of the saturation values of the absorption we were able to state that the exposed As 2 S 3 films started to polymerize at 63–69°C…
A multi-technique characterisation of cronstedtite synthetized by iron-clay interaction in a step by step cooling procedure
2013
International audience; The cooling of steel containers in radioactive-waste storage was simulated in a step-by-step experiment from 90 to 40 degrees C. Among newly formed clay minerals observed in run products, cronstedtite was identified by a number of analytical techniques (powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy). Cronstedtite has not previously been recognized to be so abundant and so well crystallized in an iron-clay interaction experiment. The supersaturation of experimental solutions with respect to cronstedtite was due to the availability of Fe and Si in solution, as a result of the dissolution of iron metal powder, quartz, and m…
Pressure Dependence of the Bandgap Bowing in Zinc-Blende ZnTe 1− x Se x
2002
We report on the pressure dependence of the bandgap bowing in the ZnTe 1 m x Se x alloy, in the whole composition range. The bandgap bowing parameter is shown to increase almost linearly with pressure from 1.23 at ambient pressure to 1.6 at 7 GPa. Saturation effects observed in the pressure dependence for x =0.1 and x =0.2 are shown to be related to the direct-to-indirect crossover. Results are discussed and interpreted in the framework of structural relaxation models for gap bowing. A prediction of these models (the negative bowing of the o 15 m ;X 1 transition) is shown to be compatible with the fact that the direct-to-indirect crossover pressure increases with the Se content.
Pulsed laser deposition of epitaxial yttrium iron garnet films with low Gilbert damping and bulk-like magnetization
2014
Yttrium iron garnet (YIG, Y [subscript 3]Fe[subscript 5]O[subscript 12]) films have been epitaxially grown on Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG, Gd[subscript 3]Ga[subscript 5]O[subscript 12]) substrates with (100) orientation using pulsed laser deposition. The films were single-phase, epitaxial with the GGG substrate, and the root-mean-square surface roughness varied between 0.14 nm and 0.2 nm. Films with thicknesses ranging from 17 to 200 nm exhibited low coercivity (<2 Oe), near-bulk room temperature saturation moments (∼135 emu cm[superscript −3]), in-plane easy axis, and damping parameters as low as 2.2 × 10[superscript −4]. These high quality YIG thin films are useful in the investigation…
Water diffusion and swelling stresses in highly crosslinked epoxy matrices
2016
Abstract The present work investigates the swelling induced stresses arising in two epoxy systems during water uptake. The analysed systems are two epoxy resin based on DGEBA monomer and DGEBF monomer respectively, both fully cured by DDS amine. The systems achieve different cross-link density degrees, and are characterised by high glass transition temperatures ranging between 200 and 230 °C. Both epoxies have been conditioned in deionized water baths at two different temperatures (50 °C and 80 °C). A desorption process at room temperature in a dry airborne environment was performed after saturation. Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis, carried out at the various stages of hydrothermal cond…
Series resistance determination and further characterization of c-Si PV modules
2012
Abstract This paper presents a new algorithm for determination of the series resistance of crystalline-Si PV modules from individual illuminated I–V curves. The ideality factor and the reverse saturation current are then extracted in the classic way. The approach is applied to in-situ measured data from modules based on two types of mc-Si feedstock. The results indicate that the method yields physically meaningful parameters. An improved definition of local ideality factor is suggested, resulting in m-V plots unaffected by the series resistance. In addition, m-I plots are introduced for the first time. The novel differential techniques reveal an unexpected rise of the ideality factor at ope…
