Solidification kinetics of hard-sphere colloidal suspensions

2007

We investigate the solidification dynamics of hard-sphere colloidal suspensions applying simultaneously small-angle and Bragg light scattering. These experiments allow a consistent picture of nucleation and crystal growth on the level of large-scale density fluctuations and of density fluctuations on the level of individual crystallites. We observe a temporally almost constant nucleation rate after an induction time that decreases with supersaturation. The classical expectation for the nucleation rate density as a function of supersaturation is in accordance with our data. We investigate the validity of the Wilson—Frenkel growth law for hard-sphere systems, which also fits our data satisfac…

Abstract. As part of the CLACE-6 campaign we performed size-resolved CCN measurements for a~supersaturation range of S = 0.079 % to 0.66% at the high-alpine research station Jungfraujoch, Switzerland, in March~2007. The derived effective hygroscopicity parameter κ describing the influence of particle composition on CCN activity was on average 0.23–0.30 for Aitken (50–100 nm) and 0.32–0.43 for accumulation mode particles (100–200 nm). The campaign average value of κ = 0.3 is similar to the average value of κ for other continental locations. When air masses came from southeasterly directions crossing the Po Valley in Italy, particles were much more hygroscopic (κ ≈ 0.42) due to…

Modeling of PAH elimination by adiabatic steam stripping and intraparticle desorption

2003

The decontamination process of solids loaded with PAH in a pilot plant is modeled. This process is separated into two main stages: fast steam stripping at the entrance of the separation tube and the subsequent slow desorption of PAH from the interior of the soil particles. The stripping process also occurs in two stages: fast diffusion controlled saturation of the partial pressures followed by the heat transfer controlled evaporation. The phase diagram of PAH/water is constructed using both the microscopic model and empirical relationships for systems with wide miscibility gaps. The numerical basis for the calculations describing desorption from the soil particles is discussed. The model fo…

Development of antimigraine transdermal delivery systems of pizotifen malate.

2015

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a transdermal delivery system of pizotifen malate. Pizotifen is frequently used in the preventive treatment of migraine, but is also indicated in eating disorders. In the course of the project, the effects of chemical enhancers such as ethanol, 1,8-cineole, limonene, azone and different fatty acids (decanoic, decenoic, dodecanoic, linoleic and oleic acids) were determined, first using a pizotifen solution. Steady state flux, diffusion and partition parameters were estimated by fitting the Scheuplein equation to the data obtained. Among the chemical enhancers studied, decenoic acid showed the highest enhancement activity, which seeme…

Effects of high-resolution esophageal manometry on oxygen saturation and hemodynamic function

2016

The effect of high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) on oxygen saturation (SaO2) and hemodynamic function has not been previously evaluated. This was a prospective study of consecutive patients referred for HRM. Demographic and clinical data were collected on all patients. The study variables included SaO2, heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). SaO2 and HR were measured at baseline, during intubation, during and 5 min after HRM. BP was measured at baseline, during and after HRM. 158 (56% women) patients with a mean age of 56 (SD 15) years were included. Thirty-five (22%) were obese and 55 (35%) were overweight. Eighteen (12%) patients had a history of respiratory disease and 27 (17%)…

Non-Linear Inductors Characterization in Real Operating Conditions for Power Density Optimization in SMPS

2021

The exploitation of power inductors outside their linear region in switching converters can be achieved by raising the current until a decreasing of the inductance can be noticed. It allows using a smaller magnetic core increasing the power density of the converter. On the other hand, a detailed description of the magnetization curve including the temperature is required. Since this information is often not included in the inductor’s datasheets, this paper shows how to identify the behavior of an inductor when it is operated up to saturation and its temperature rises. In order to characterize the inductor in real operating conditions, a dedicated measurement rig has been developed. It consi…

Volume change characteristics of fine-grained soils due to sequential thermo-mechanical stresses

2019

Know-how of volume change characteristics, VCC, of the fine-grained soils, exposed to thermal stresses, is essential for design of various thermo-active structures. These stresses are known to induce excess pore-water pressure, Δu θ , in the saturated state of such soils, which in turn affects their compression and shear strength characteristics. In this context, through several experimental studies, the effect of thermo-mechanical stress-path, the over-consolidation ratio (OCR) and degree of saturation on VCC (viz., thermally induced volumetric strain, ε vθ , compression and re-compression indices, c c and c r ) of the fine-grained soils has been demonstrated by earlier researchers. Howeve…

Impact of Various Thermal Doses on the Oxygenation and Blood Flow in Malignant Tumors Upon Localized Hyperthermia

1984

Hyperthermia exhibits various direct cytocidal effects (Dickson, 1977; Overgaard, 1977; Suit, 1977). During heat treatment in vivo, several indirect mechanisms enhance the direct cell-killing capacity of hyperthermia. Therefore, the effective use of hyperthermia can overcome some of the well-known problems involved in modern radiation therapy at least in some malignant tumors.

Intrusion of nonwetting liquid in paper

2007

The saturation curve of a sample of paper board was measured with mercury-intrusion porosimetry, and the three-dimensional structure of its pore space was determined by x-ray tomographic imaging. Ab initio numerical simulation of intrusion on the tomographic reconstruction, based on the lattice-Boltzmann method, was in excellent agreement with the measured saturation curve. A numerical invasion-percolation simulation in the same tomographic reconstruction showed good agreement with the lattice-Boltzmann simulation. The access function of the sample, determined from the saturation curve and the pore-throat distribution determined from the tomographic reconstruction, indicated that the ink-bo…
