Spin crossover complexes as building units of hydrogen-bonded nanoporous structures

The paper reports on the synthesis, crystal structure, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and magnetic properties of a spin crossover salt of formula [Fe(bpp)2](cis,cis-1,3,5-Hchtc)·5.5 H2O (1) (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3yl)pyridine; cis,cis-1,3,5-Hchtc = monoprotonated cyclohexanetricarboxylate dianion). The salt shows a porous structure with water molecules sitting in the channels. The electronic configuration of the Fe2+ ions is high-spin (HS). Desolvation of 1 yields a material exhibiting an abrupt spin crossover with a thermal hysteresis loop located near room temperature (T1/2↑ = 319 K and T1/2↓ = 309 K). Benzo-Fused Periacenes or Double Helicenes? Different Cyclodehydrogenation Pathways on Surface and in Solution

Controlling the regioselectivity of C-H activation in unimolecular reactions is of great significance for the rational synthesis of functional graphene nanostructures, which are called nanographenes. Here, we demonstrate that the adsorption of tetranaphthyl- p-terphenyl precursors on metal surfaces can completely change the cyclodehydrogenation route and lead to obtaining planar benzo-fused perihexacenes rather than double [7]helicenes during solution synthesis. Nanostructured medical sutures with antibacterial properties

Bacterial repellence in suture materials is a desirable property that can potentially improve the healing process by preventing infection. We describe a method for generating nanostructures at the surface of commercial sutures of different composition, and their potential for preventing biofilm formation. We show how bacteria attachment is altered in the presence of nanosized topographies and identify optimum designs for preventing it without compromising biocompatibility and applicability in terms of nanostructure robustness or tissue friction. Current rectification by nanoparticle blocking in single cylindrical nanopores.

Blocking of a charged pore by an oppositely charged nanoparticle can support rectifying properties in a cylindrical nanopore, as opposed to the usual case of a fixed asymmetry in the pore geometry and charge distribution. We present here experimental data and model calculations to confirm this fundamental effect. The nanostructure imaging and the effects of nanoparticle concentration, pore radius, and salt concentration on the electrical conductance–voltage (G–V) curves are discussed. Mapping of local conductivity variations on fragile nanopillar arrays by scanning conductive torsion mode microscopy.

A gentle method that combines torsion mode topography imaging with conductive scanning force microscopy is presented. By applying an electrical bias voltage between tip and sample surface, changes in the local sample conductivity can be mapped. The topography and local conductivity variations on fragile free-standing nanopillar arrays were investigated. These samples were fabricated by an anodized aluminum oxide template process using a thermally cross-linked triphenylamine-derivate semicondcutor. Cerium oxyhydroxide nanowire growth via electrogeneration of base in nonaqueous electrolytes

The preparation of compact cerium oxyhydroxide nanowires into anodic alumina membranes from cerium chloride in ethanol solution via electrogeneration of base is reported. Scanning electron microscopy analyses indicate that dense, well-aligned, and highly ordered nanowires can be formed in a wide range of applied potentials and current densities in alcoholic solution. The employment of water brings to a hybrid nanotube/nanowire structure, suggesting a key role of the electrolyte nature in determining the morphology of the deposit. Influence of electrodeposition techniques on Ni nanostructures

Abstract Different Ni nanostructure arrays were fabricated by pulsed electrodeposition from a Watts bath inside the pores of anodic alumina membrane (AAM) templates. Under a trapezoidal waveform of potential, consisting of fast linear sweeps between 0 and −3 V (SCE) interleaved by delay times at 0 (10 s) and −3 V (0.1 s), Ni nanowires were grown. The rate of nanowires growth was constant up to 60 min of deposition. Evaluation of the healing of precoated vascular dacron prostheses.

Knitted and woven Dacron grafts commercially coated with bovine collagen, gelatin and human albumin were implanted end-to-side between the infrarenal aorta and the bifurcation in 35 growing pigs. Grafts were explanted after 4, 8 and 12 weeks and compared to 6 uncoated knitted prostheses preclotted with blood that served as a control. Uncoated grafts rapidly developed a firmly attached neointima lined with endothelium. Compared with coated grafts the thrombus-free area of uncoated grafts was significantly larger (P less than 0.05). Lipid nanocarriers containing sorafenib inhibit colonies formation in human hepatocarcinoma cells

Here, the potential of two nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) for controlled release of sorafenib was evaluated. The obtained systems showed characteristics suitable as drug delivery systems for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through parenteral administration. The use of a mixture between a solid lipid (tripalmitin) with a liquid lipid (Captex 355 EP/NF or Miglyol 812) to prepare NLC systems could give a higher drug loading capacity and a longer term stability during storage than that obtained by using only solid lipids.
