Structural, vibrational and electrical study of compressed BiTeBr
2016
Compresed BiTeBr has been studied from a joint experimental and theoretical perspective. Room-temperature x-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and transport measurements at high pressures have been performed in this layered semiconductor and interpreted with the help of ab initio calculations. A reversible first-order phase transition has been observed above 6–7 GPa, but changes in structural, vibrational, and electrical properties have also been noted near 2 GPa. Structural and vibrational changes are likely due to the hardening of interlayer forces rather than to a second-order isostructural phase transition while electrical changes are mainly attributed to changes in the electron mobilit…
Fine tuning of thermoelectric performance in phase-separated half-Heusler compounds
2015
Two successful recipes to enhance the thermoelectric performance, namely carrier concentration optimization and reduction of thermal conductivity, have been combined and applied to the p-type (Ti/Zr/Hf)CoSb1−xSnx system. An intrinsic micrometer-scale phase separation increases the phonon scattering and reduces the lattice thermal conductivity. A substitution of 15% Sb by Sn optimizes the electronic properties. Starting from this, further improvement of the thermoelectric properties has been achieved by a fine tuning of the Ti to Hf ratio. The microstructuring of the samples was studied in detail with high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and element mapping electron microscop…
Generation of Bessel beam arrays through Dammann gratings.
2012
In this work we apply the Dammann grating concept to generate an equal-intensity square array of Bessel quasi-free diffraction beams that diverge from a common center. We generate a binary phase mask that combines the axicon phase with the phase of a Dammann grating. The procedure can be extended to include vortex spiral phases that generate an array of optical pipes. Experimental results are provided by means of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display operating as a binary π phase spatial light modulator.
Nondiffracting Bessel plasmons.
2011
We report on the existence of nondiffracting Bessel surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), advancing at either superluminal or subluminal phase velocities. These wave fields feature deep subwavelength FWHM, but are supported by high-order homogeneous SPPs of a metal/dielectric (MD) superlattice. The beam axis can be relocated to any MD interface, by interfering multiple converging SPPs with controlled phase matching. Dissipative effects in metals lead to a diffraction-free regime that is limited by the energy attenuation length. However, the ultra-localization of the diffracted wave field might still be maintained by more than one order of magnitude. This research was funded by the Spanish Mini…
RF magnetron-sputtered coatings deposited from biphasic calcium phosphate targets for biomedical implant applications
2017
Bioactive calcium phosphate coatings were deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering from biphasic targets of hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate, sintered at different mass % ratios. According to Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction data, the deposited hydroxyapatite coatings have a disordered structure. High-temperature treatment of the coatings in air leads to a transformation of the quasi-amorphous structure into a crystalline one. A correlation has been observed between the increase in the Ca content in the coatings and a subsequent decrease in Ca in the biphasic targets after a series of deposition processes. It was proposed that the addition of tricalcium phosphate to th…

Raman scattering as a tool for the evaluation of strain inGaN∕AlNquantum dots: The effect of capping
2007
The strain state of $\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{N}∕\mathrm{Al}\mathrm{N}$ quantum dots grown on $6H\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{C}$ has been investigated as a function of AlN capping thickness by three different techniques. On the one hand, resonant Raman scattering allowed the detection of the ${A}_{1}(\mathrm{LO})$ quasiconfined mode. It was found that its frequency increases with AlN deposition, while its linewidth did not evolve significantly. Available experiments of multiwavelength anomalous diffraction and diffraction anomalous fine structure on the same samples provided the determination of the wurtzite lattice parameters $a$ and $c$ of the quantum dots. A very good agreement is …
Strain‐induced compression of smectic layers in free‐standing liquid crystalline elastomer films
2005
The deformation of oriented smectic liquid crystal elastomer films with smectic layers parallel to the film surface was studied using optical reflectometry and small angle X‐ray diffraction. Reflectometry data show that in the chosen material, in‐plane strain causes a change in the optical thickness of the free‐standing films. Small angle X‐ray scattering was used to explore the molecular origin of this effect. The X‐ray scattering data confirm that the change in optical thickness originates from the compression of the individual smectic layers. The measured Poisson ratio in the smectic A and C* phases is close to ½, in contrast to the smectic elastomers investigated earlier by Nishikawa et…

GdBO3 and YBO3 crystals under compression
2021
High-pressure X-ray diffraction studies on nanocrystals of the GdBO3 and YBO3 rare-earth orthoborates are herein reported up to 17.4(2) and 13.4(2) GPa respectively. The subsequent determination of the room-temperature pressure-volume equations of state is presented and discussed in the context of contemporary publications which contradict the findings of this work. In particular, the isothermal bulk moduli of GdBO3 and YBO3 are found to be 170(13) and 163(13) GPa respectively, almost 50% smaller than recent findings. Our experimental results provide an accurate revision of the high-pressure compressibility behaviour of GdBO3 and YBO3 which is consistent with the known systematics in isomor…
