Bhabha Scattering and a special pencil of K3 surfaces

2018

We study a pencil of K3 surfaces that appeared in the $2$-loop diagrams in Bhabha scattering. By analysing in detail the Picard lattice of the general and special members of the pencil, we identify the pencil with the celebrated Ap\'ery--Fermi pencil, that was related to Ap\'ery's proof of the irrationality of $\zeta(3)$ through the work of F. Beukers, C. Peters and J. Stienstra. The same pencil appears miraculously in different and seemingly unrelated physical contexts.

A damping preconditioner for time-harmonic wave equations in fluid and elastic material

2009

A physical damping is considered as a preconditioning technique for acoustic and elastic wave scattering. The earlier preconditioners for the Helmholtz equation are generalized for elastic materials and three-dimensional domains. An algebraic multigrid method is used in approximating the inverse of damped operators. Several numerical experiments demonstrate the behavior of the method in complicated two-dimensional and three-dimensional domains. peerReviewed

Waveguiding properties of a photonic crystal fiber with a solid core surrounded by four large air holes

2009

The polarization-dependent guiding properties of a hexagonal-lattice photonic crystal fiber with a solid-core surrounded by four large air holes are investigated. The appearance of a polarization dependent cutoff frequency, together with several parameters as the birefringence, the modal effective area, the group velocity dispersion and the polarization dependent loss are analyzed. A collection of fibers with different structural parameters were fabricated and characterized. An effective anti-guide structure from at least 450 nm to 1750 nm, a polarizing fiber with a polarization dependent loss of 16 dB/m at 1550 nm, and an endlessly singlemode polarization-maintaining fiber with group biref…

On the nature of phase separation in a commercial aluminium-lithium alloy

1996

Abstract The formation of lithium-rich precipitate particles, known as δ′ phase, is responsible for the particularly desirable mechanical properties which make aluminium-lithium alloys interesting for different industrial applications. The structure and the kinetics of the phase separation process are conveniently studied by small-angle X-ray scattering, though uncertainties remain on the actual shape of the phase diagram of the system, particularly in the region of interest. In this paper are reported small-angle X-ray scattering measurements on a commercial AlLi (8.49% Li atoms) both in the region of formation of the precipitate and during its successive growth. Modelling of the experime…

Electrical resistivity of amorphous simple metals at moderately low temperatures

1999

Abstract The dependence of electrical resistivity ρ ( T ) on temperature T in a region of moderate temperatures is considered for amorphous simple metals. It is shown within the Faber–Ziman theory that the ratio [ ρ ( T )− ρ (0)]/ T 2 has a maximum in the temperature region 10 K⩽ T ⩽100 K The theory is illustrated by numerical calculations performed for hard-sphere models of amorphous Mg and Zn.

Optical gain, spontaneous and stimulated emission of surface plasmon polaritons in confined plasmonic waveguide

2010

International audience; We develop a theoretical model to compute the local density of states in a confined plasmonic waveguide. Based on this model, we derive a simple formula with a clear physical interpretation for the lifetime modification of emitters embedded in the waveguide. The gain distribution within the active medium is then computed following the formalism developed in a recent work [Phys. Rev. B 78, 161401 (2008)], by taking rigorously into account the pump irradiance and emitters lifetime modifications in the system. We finally apply this formalism to describe gain–assisted propagation in a dielectric–loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide.

Amyloid Fibrils Formation of Concanavalin A at Basic pH

2011

Mechanisms of partial unfolding and aggregation of proteins are of extreme interest in view of the fact that several human pathologies are characterized by the formation and deposition of protein-insoluble material, mainly composed of amyloid fibrils. Here we report on an experimental study on the heat-induced aggregation mechanisms, at basic pH, of concanavalin A (ConA), used as a model system. Thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence and multiangle light scattering allowed us to detect different intertwined steps in the formation of ConA aggregates. In particular, the ThT fluorescence increase, observed in the first phase of aggregation, reveals the formation of intermolecular β-sheet structure wh…

The use of Stokes-Mueller polarimetry for assessment of amyloid-β progression in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease

2020

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease, being a major societal burden, demands improvement of current techniques for its treatment and diagnostics. Currently only autopsy histology is able to provide the definite diagnosis for Alzheimer’s disease. However, the procedure is rather time consuming and costly. In the current study, we utilized Stokes and Mueller polarimetry techniques to screen for amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded mouse brain tissue at different stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The study has shown that the presence of Aβ plaques influences the properties of scattered polarized light. The Poincaré sphere was used as a graphical tool for the visualization of the a…
