On the phase dependence of the interconversion of the motional modes in a Penning trap by quadrupolar excitation

Abstract The interconversion of the radial motional modes in a Penning trap (magnetron and cyclotron modes) by an external quadrupolar rf-field with a frequency near the true cyclotron frequency ω c plays an important role in the measurement cycle of Penning trap mass spectrometry. Ions to be measured are prepared in a state of magnetron motion which is then resonantly converted into cyclotron motion. The data analysis is usually carried out under the assumption that the initial motional state of the ions has been a pure magnetron state. Fast microscopic method for large scale determination of structure, morphology, and quality of thin colloidal crystals.

We present a novel fast microscopic method to analyze the crystal structures of air-dried or suspended colloidal multilayer systems. Once typical lattice spacings of such films are in the range of visible light, characteristic Bragg scattering patterns are observed. If in microscopic observations these are excluded from image construction, a unique color coding for regions of different structures, morphologies, and layer numbers results. Incoherently scattering defect structures, however, may not be excluded from image construction and thus remain visible with high resolution.

Physicochemical Investigation of Lightfast AgCl and AgBr Nanoparticles Synthesized by a Novel Solid−Solid Reaction

Small size AgX (X = Br, Cl) nanoparticles have been synthesized by a novel solid−solid reaction performed by mixing two dry dispersions of AgNO3 and KX nanoparticles in AOT/n-heptane solutions. UV−vis investigation ascertained that formation of nanosized particles taking place after the mixing process is fast and complete. Microcalorimetric measurements of the thermal effect coupled with the mixing process suggest the occurrence of confinement effects and adsorption of the surfactant molecules at the nanoparticle surface, hinting at formation of charged nonstoichiometric surfactant-coated nanoparticles. Abstract The effect of the addition of alkali ions to commercial amorphous silica, generally used as support for heterogeneous catalysts, has been investigated from the point of view of morphological and structural changes. Samples of alkali-doped silica were prepared by impregnation and subsequent calcination at various temperatures. Direct Evidence of the Amino Acid Side Chain and Backbone Contributions to Protein Anharmonicity

Elastic incoherent neutron scattering has been used to study the temperature dependence of the mean-square displacements of nonexchangeable hydrogen atoms in powders of a series of homomeric polypeptides (polyglycine, polyalanine, polyphenylalanine and polyisoleucine) in comparison with myoglobin at the same hydration level (h = 0.2). The aim of the work was to measure the dynamic behavior of different amino acid residues separately and assess the contribution of each type of side chain to the anharmonic dynamics of proteins. New aspects of scattering and absorbing properties of atmospheric aerosol particles

Abstract Knowledge of the scattering and absorbing processes of the atmospheric aerosol particles in the solar wavelength range is necessary in order to calculate the energy balance of the atmosphere. Both of these depend on the relative humidity of the air. Until now little was known of the behavior of the particles. This paper shows experimental and theoretical results of the real and imaginary part of the refractive index of the aerosol particles at different relative humidities.

A Multipurpose Instrument To Measure the Vitreous Properties of Charged Colloidal Solids

We present a new high-precision light-scattering setup to study the properties of colloidal solids. It combines static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, and torsional resonance spectroscopy with a flexible and reliable preparational procedure. All three experiments can be performed quasi-simultaneously on the same mechanically undisturbed sample. Thus, unequivocal identification of glassy behavior in a comprehensive characterization dependent on interaction parameters becomes possible. A detailed description of the mechanics is given. Forced Rayleigh scattering from non-harmonic gratings applied to complex diffusion processes in glass-forming liquids

Abstract Tracer diffusion of 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) and its photoproduct in super-cooled phenolphthalein-dimethyl-ether (PDE) was studied by forced Rayleigh scattering. In order to investigate the spatial frequency dependence of the grating dynamics, several spatial harmonics of the grating with non-sinusoidal phase profile produced by non-linear recording were monitored. An optical scheme with a diverging reading beam is proposed for simultaneous reconstruction of the harmonic components.

"Sweet Chemistry": a Green Way for Obtaining Selenium Nanoparticles Active against Cancer Cells

We present an environment friendly synthesis of selenium nanoparticles and the study of their cytotoxic activity against uterine sarcoma cancer and fibroblasts cells. Amorphous selenium (a-SeNPs) and trigonal selenium (t-SeNPs) were synthesized using D-fructose as the reducing agent and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES), dynamic light scattering (DLS) to obtain zeta potential values and cyclic voltammetry (CV). In-medium pi-pi Correlation Induced by Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry

We show that both the linear and the non-linear chiral models give an enhancement of the pi-pi cross section near the 2pi threshold in the scalar-iso-scalar (I=J=0) channel in nuclear matter. The reduction of the chiral condensate, i.e., the partial chiral restoration in nuclear matter, is responsible for the enhancement in both cases. We extract an effective 4pi-nucleon vertex which is responsible for the enhancement but has not been considered in the non-liear models for in-medium pi-pi interaction. Relation of this vertex and a next-to-leading order terms in the heavy-baryon chiral lagrangian, L_piN^(2), is also discussed.
