Observation of a superfluid component within solid helium.
2011
We demonstrate by neutron scattering that a localized superfluid component exists at high pressures within solid helium in aerogel. Its existence is deduced from the observation of two sharp phonon-roton spectra which are clearly distinguishable from modes in bulk superfluid helium. These roton excitations exhibit different roton gap parameters than the roton observed in the bulk fluid at freezing pressure. One of the roton modes disappears after annealing the samples. Comparison with theoretical calculations suggests that the model that reproduces the observed data best is that of superfluid double layers within the solid and at the helium-substrate interface.
Replica field theory for anharmonic sound attenuation in glasses
2011
Abstract A saddle-point treatment of interacting phonons in a disordered environment is developed. In contrast to crystalline solids, anharmonic attenuation of density fluctuations becomes important in the hydrodynamic regime, due to a broken momentum conservation. The variance of the shear modulus Δ2 turns out to be the strength of the disorder enhanced phonon–phonon interaction. In the low-frequency regime (below the boson peak frequency) we obtain an Akhiezer-like sound attenuation law Γ ∝ Τω2. Together with the usual Rayleigh scattering mechanism this yields a crossover of the Brillouin linewidth from a ω2 to a ω4 regime. The crossover frequency ωc is fully determined by the boson peak …
Subdiffractive solitons in bose-einstein condensates
2005
We predict the disappearance of diffraction (the increase of the mass) of Bose-Einstein condensates in counter-moving periodic potentials. We demonstrate subdiffractive solitons (stable droplets of the condensate) in the vicinity of this zero diffraction point.
Resonant Rayleigh scattering by confined two-dimensional excitonic states
1997
A systematic study of resonant Rayleigh scattering in semiconductor single quantum wells has been carried out. The dependence of the scattering efficiency on the well width and the temperature has been investigated. The behaviour observed in the resonant Rayleigh spectra can be explained in terms of the confinement of the excitonic states in the plane of the well due to fluctuations in the well width. A microscopic theoretical model for the elastic scattering of light by weakly confined two-dimensional excitonic states has been developed. The Rayleigh scattering efficiency has been calculated to the lowest-order of perturbation theory and the results found to be in good agreement with the e…

Entanglement interferometry for precision measurement of atomic scattering properties.
2003
We report on a two-particle matter wave interferometer realized with pairs of trapped 87Rb atoms. Each pair of atoms is confined at a single site of an optical lattice potential. The interferometer is realized by first creating a coherent spin-mixture of the two atoms and then tuning the inter-state scattering length via a Feshbach resonance. The selective change of the inter-state scattering length leads to an entanglement dynamics of the two-particle state that can be detected in a Ramsey interference experiment. This entanglement dynamics is employed for a precision measurement of atomic interaction parameters. Furthermore, the interferometer allows to separate lattice sites with one or …
Investigation of Feshbach resonances in ultracold K40 spin mixtures
2017
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances are an indispensable tool for experiments with atomic quantum gases. We report on 37 thus far unpublished Feshbach resonances and four further probable Feshbach resonances in spin mixtures of ultracold fermionic $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ with temperatures well below 100 nK. In particular, we locate a broad resonance at $B=389.7\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\text{G}$ with a magnetic width of $26.7\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\text{G}$. Here $1\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\text{G}={10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\text{T}$. Furthermore, by exciting low-energy spin waves, we demonstrate a means to precisely determine the zero crossing of the scatte…
Quantum engineering of Majorana quasiparticles in one-dimensional optical lattices
2017
We propose a feasible way of engineering Majorana-type quasiparticles in ultracold fermionic gases on a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. For this purpose, imbalanced ultracold atoms interacting by the spin-orbit coupling should be hybridized with a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) molecular cloud. By constraining the profile of an internal defect potential we show that the Majorana-type excitations can be created or annihilated. This process is modelled within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. This study is relevant also to nanoscopic 1D superconductors where modification of the internal defect potential can be obtained by electrostatic means.
FERMION CONDENSATION, T -LINEAR RESISTIVITY AND PLANCKIAN LIMIT
2019
We explain recent challenging experimental observations of universal scattering rate related to the linear-temperature resistivity exhibited by a large corps of both strongly correlated Fermi systems and conventional metals. We show that the observed scattering rate in strongly correlated Fermi systems like heavy fermion metals and high-$T_c$ superconductors stems from phonon contribution that induce the linear temperature dependence of a resistivity. The above phonons are formed by the presence of flat band, resulting from the topological fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT). We emphasize that so - called Planckian limit, widely used to explain the above universal scatteri…
