Atoms embedded in an electron gas: Phase shifts and cross sections

1983

The Fermi-level scattering phase shifts and the transport cross sections are reported for atoms embedded in a homogeneous electron gas. The applications of the results are discussed, using the electronic stopping power for slow ions and impurity resistivity as examples. Peer reviewed

Comparison between simulated and observed LHC beam backgrounds in the ATLAS experiment at E beam =4 TeV

2018

Results of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations of beam-induced background (BIB) in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and compared with data recorded in 2012. During normal physics operation this background arises mainly from scattering of the 4 TeV protons on residual gas in the beam pipe. Methods of reconstructing the BIB signals in the ATLAS detector, developed and implemented in the simulation chain based on the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation package, are described. The interaction rates are determined from the residual gas pressure distribution in the LHC ring in order to set an absolute scale on the predicted rates of BIB so that they can be compared qua…

Coupling two radar backscattering models to assess soil roughness and surface water content at farm scale

2013

Remote sensing techniques are useful for agro-hydrological monitoring at the farm scale because the availability of spatially and temporally distributed data improves agricultural models for irrigation and crop yield optimization under water scarcity conditions. This research focuses on the surface water content retrieval using active microwave data. Two semi-empirical models were chosen as these showed the best performances in simulating cross and co-polarized backscatter. Thus, these models were coupled to obtain reliable assessments of both soil water content and soil roughness. The use of the coupled model enables one to avoid using roughness measured in situ. Remote sensing images and …

Search for weakly decaying b -flavored pentaquarks

2018

Investigations of the existence of pentaquark states containing a single $b$ (anti)quark decaying weakly into four specific final states J/$\psi K^+\pi^- p$, J/$\psi K^- \pi^- p$, J/$\psi K^- \pi^+ p$, and $J/\psi \phi (1020) p$ are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0/fb in 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions acquired with the LHCb detector. Signals are not observed and upper limits are set on the product of the production cross section times branching fraction with respect to that of the $\Lambda_b$.

Conformational dynamics of full-length inducible human Hsp70 derived from microsecond molecular dynamics simulations in explicit solvent

2013

Human 70 kDa heat shock protein (hHsp70) is an ATP-dependent chaperone and is currently an important target for developing new drugs in cancer therapy. Knowledge of the conformations of hHsp70 is central to understand the interactions between its nucleotide-binding domain (NBD) and substrate-binding domain (SBD) and is a prerequisite to design inhibitors. The conformations of ADP-bound (or nucleotide-free) hHsp70 and ATP-bound hHsp70 was investigated by using unbiased all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of homology models of hHsp70 in explicit solvent on a timescale of .5 and 2.7 μs, respectively. The conformational heterogeneity of hHsp70 was analyzed by computing effective free-e…

A new calibration of the effective scattering albedo and soil roughness parameters in the SMOS SM retrieval algorithm

2017

Abstract This study focuses on the calibration of the effective vegetation scattering albedo (ω) and surface soil roughness parameters (H R , and N Rp , p = H,V) in the Soil Moisture (SM) retrieval from L-band passive microwave observations using the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model. In the current Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Level 2 (L2), v620, and Level 3 (L3), v300, SM retrieval algorithms, low vegetated areas are parameterized by ω = 0 and H R  = 0.1, whereas values of ω = 0.06 − 0.08 and H R  = 0.3 are used for forests. Several parameterizations of the vegetation and soil roughness parameters (ω, H R and N Rp , p = H,V) were tested in this study, tre…

Spin-dependent WIMP-nucleus scattering off 125Te, 129Xe, and 131Xe in the microscopic interacting boson-fermion model

2019

We perform calculations of structure functions for elastic and inelastic spin-dependent scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) off 125Te, 129Xe, and 131Xe. The nuclear structure calculations are performed in the microscopic interacting boson-fermion model (IBFM-2). In our calculations we employ one-body and leading long-range two-body WIMP-nucleus currents derived from chiral effective field theory. We demonstrate that the relevant matrix elements can be reliably computed in the IBFM-2, which will allow investigation of heavy deformed nuclei previously inaccessible to theoretical calculations. peerReviewed

A Novel Amplify-and-Forward Relay Channel Model for Mobile-to-Mobile Fading Channels under Line-of-Sight Conditions

2021

In this chapter, we have proposed a new flexible M2M amplify-and-forward relay fading channel model under LOS propagation conditions. The novelty in the model is that we have considered the LOS components in both transmission links, i.e., the direct link between the source mobile station and the destination mobile station as well as the link via the mobile relay. By analogy with multiple scattering radio propagation channels, we have developed the MLSS fading channel as a second-order scattering channel, where the received signal comprises the single and double scattered components. Furthermore, the flexibility of the MLSS fading channel model comes from the fact that it can be reduced to d…
