Hierarchically Structured Titania Films Prepared by Polymer/Colloidal Templating
2010
Hierarchically structured titania films for application in hybrid solar cells are prepared by combining microsphere templating and sol-gel chemistry with an amphiphilic diblock copolymer as a structure-directing agent. The films have a functional structure on three size scales: (1) on the micrometer scale a holelike structure for reduction of light reflection, (2) on an intermediate scale macropores for surface roughening and improved infiltration of a hole transport material, and (3) on a nanometer scale a mesoporous structure for charge generation. Poly(dimethyl siloxane)-block-methyl methacrylate poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-b-MA(PEO)) is used as a structure-directing agent for the prepara…
Nanoscale hybrid silica/polymer Janus particles with a double-responsive hemicorona
2015
Abstract We report a versatile large-scale synthesis strategy for hybrid Janus nanoparticles with a silica core and a unilaterally attached polymer corona in a size range below 100 nm. The stimuli-responsive behavior of these nanoparticles with a poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) hemicorona is investigated. The synthesis is based on a modified version of the Pickering emulsion polymerization technique in combination with surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in a “grafting from” approach. In a first step, poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex particles are prepared via Pickering emulsion polymerization. Colloidal stability is provided by 30 nm silica nan…
Cellulose-click-ferrocenes as docking spots for cyclodextrin
2012
A novel synthesis of ferrocene-modified cellulose, prepared from 6-azido-6-deoxy-cellulose and ethynylferrocene, is presented. The two components were coupled via copper-catalyzed click-type cycloaddition under microwave-assisted conditions. The surface structure of the cellulose derivative was investigated in comparison with that of pure, microcrystalline cellulose using electron microscopy (scanning, transmission and scanning transmission), showing iron atoms of ferrocene as homogeneously distributed particles. They are detectable as clear signals in the energy-dispersive X-ray profile. In addition, Rame-β-cyclodextrin was supramolecularly attached to cellulose and the complex formed was …
Diffusion of spherical micronetworks in polymer diluent systems and melts studied by dynamic light scattering techniques
1994
Spherical polystyrene (PS) micronetworks can be prepared in microemulsion with bulk radii of 5–60 nm and different cross-linking densities. The diffusion of these PS spheres has been studied in polymer diluent systems ranging from dilute solutions to plasticized melts by using forced Rayleigh scattering and photon correlation spectroscopy. On increasing the PS concentration, a colloid glass transition is observed at a volume fraction ΦC ≈ 0.64 of the swollen spheres. At higher concentration inside the “colloid glass” state the sphere diffusion is slowed down and becomes very complex but can be observed up to the limit of a melt of collapsed spheres.
Solution Properties of Polysarcosine: From Absolute and Relative Molar Mass Determinations to Complement Activation
2018
Polysarcosine (pSar) was one of the first polymers synthesized in a controlled living manner, but it was only recently when it was reconsidered as a promising alternative for poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in biomedical applications. Despite receiving more and more attention, very little is known about the solution properties of pSar, such as coil dimensions and thermodynamic interactions. In this article, we report on these properties of pSar with degrees of polymerization 50 < X-n < 400 that were prepared by controlled living ring-opening polymerization. The polymers are characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, dynamic and static light scattering (SL…
Tunable dynamic hydrophobic attachment of guest molecules in amphiphilic core–shell polymers
2016
In this study, synthesis and dynamic properties of amphiphilic core–shell polymers are reported as monitored through their interaction with small amphiphilic molecules. Brush-like structures are formed with a hydrophobic core surrounded by a hydrophilic shell utilizing controlled radical addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of macromonomers consisting of linear polyglycerol chains attached to alkylene methacrylate. Continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW EPR) spectroscopy is employed to study how the amphiphilic, paramagnetic spin probe 16-DSA (16-doxyl stearic acid) interacts with polymers of different alkylene chain lengths in their hydrophobic cores and…
Determination of the conformation of polymers in the amorphous solid state and in concentrated solution by neutron diffraction
1975
Abstract From the coherent neutron scattering on dilute solid solutions of the ordinary polymer within the deuterated polymer, conformation parameters of polymer chains in amorphous solid states can be determined. In this way vitreous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been investigated. The chains form unperturbed coils and the radius of gyration is very near to the corresponding value in dilute solutions of the same polymer in the low molecular θ-solvent butyl chloride. The same principle of measurement has been applied to concentrated solutions of PMMA in D-acetone. The solutions contained 50% polymer, the main part of which (98% and more) was deuterated so that the system was opticall…
Liquid Crystals from Polymer-Functionalized TiO2 Nanorod Mesogens
2008
In this work, we functionalized TiO2 nanorods with dopamine-functionalized diblock copolymers. After functionalization, they are well dispersible in organic solvents. Light scattering proves that t...
Preparation and determination of the structure of high-performance polymer blends by small-angle neutron scattering
1995
Amorphous blends from a deuterated polyaryletherketone and a polyetherimide have been prepared and investigated by neutron scattering. The used components differ remarkably in their structure antheir solution properties. The blends on the other hand are combinatorial mixtures : the scattering quantity Φ 1 Φ 2 /S(q) is independent of the composition of the blends if the polymer chains have the same length
Small angle X-ray scattering from amorphous polymers arising from heterogeneities
1973
The small angle X-ray scattering of glassy polymers (PET, PC, PVC, PMMA) and of polymer melts (PE) was studied. The dependence of the intensity scattered at small angles on the sample treatment suggests that neither the inherent structure of the pure polymer phase nor microholes are the origin of the scattering. In agreement with all experimental facts the scattering can be attributed to foreign particles such as for instance stabilizers in the polymer matrix. The consequence of this result is discussed with respect to the nodular structure of the amorphous phase and with respect to structural models of the amorphous phase. The nodular structure is not related to regions of different densit…
