The charm-quark contribution to light-by-light scattering in the muon (−2) from lattice QCD

We compute the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g-2$ from the charm quark using lattice QCD. The calculation is performed on ensembles generated with dynamical $(u,d,s)$ quarks at the SU(3)$_{\rm f}$ symmetric point with degenerate pion and kaon masses of around 415 MeV. It includes the connected charm contribution, as well as the leading disconnected Wick contraction, involving the correlation between a charm and a light-quark loop. Cutoff effects turn out to be sizeable, which leads us to use lighter-than-physical charm masses, to employ a broad range of lattice spacings reaching down to 0.039 fm and to perform a combined charm-mass and continuum extrapolation.…

STATUS OF STRANGENESS ELECTRO-PRODUCTION AT MAMI

At the Institut für Kernphysik in Mainz, Germany, the microtron MAMI has been upgraded to 1.5 GeV electron beam energy and can now be used to study strange hadronic systems. The magnetic spectrometer KAOS from GSI was dismantled and re-installed in the spectrometer facility operated by the A1 collaboration. The spectrometer's primary purpose is to study strangeness electro-production. Its compact design and its capability to detect negative and positive charged particles simultaneously under forward scattering angles complements the existing spectrometers. Artefacts in CBCT: a review

Artefacts are common in today's cone beam CT (CBCT). They are induced by discrepancies between the mathematical modelling and the actual physical imaging process. Since artefacts may interfere with the diagnostic process performed on CBCT data sets, every user should be aware of their presence. This article aims to discuss the most prominent artefacts identified in the scientific literature and review the existing knowledge on these artefacts. We also briefly review the basic three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction concept applied by today's CBCT scanners, as all artefacts are more or less directly related to it.

Interocular differences in visual quality due to ocular aberrations and scattering in a patient with post-traumatic anisocoria: A case report

AbstractA 41-year-old patient with visual disturbances after an ocular trauma in right eye three years before was carefully analyzed and discussed. No corneal or intraocular sequelae were present. Only a significant anisocoria could be observed. Right eye (RE) achieved a best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) of 0.05 LogMAR with a refraction of +0.50 sphere and −1.25 cylinder. Left eye (LE) achieved a BSCVA of 0.0 LogMAR with a refraction of +0.75 sphere and −1.00 cylinder. In photopic conditions pupil diameter was 4.96mm for RE and 3.02mm for LE whereas in scotopic conditions, these values were 7.45mm and 6.71mm, respectively. Suitability of smartphone for single-snapshot mapping of skin melanin, oxy-hemoglobin and deoxy-hemoglobin under 3-wavelengths illumination was demonstrated. Simultaneous 448-532-659 nm illumination was provided by a portable laser-based prototype.

Quadrature domains for the Helmholtz equation with applications to non-scattering phenomena

In this paper, we introduce quadrature domains for the Helmholtz equation. We show existence results for such domains and implement the so-called partial balayage procedure. We also give an application to inverse scattering problems, and show that there are non-scattering domains for the Helmholtz equation at any positive frequency that have inward cusps.

Investigation on the stability of dispersion of zirconia nanoparticles prepared by microwave- hydrothermal synthesis

Difficulties in reproducing the performances of nanoparticles dispersions are obstructive for the progress of the nanotechnology. A plausible reason for this variability is the lack of the control of the stability as well as the dimensions of the nanoparticles in the dispersions. In this work we report results of investigations on the stability of zirconia nanoparticles in aqueous medium, monitoring nanoparticles sizes by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS).
